Script writers usually give a cliffhanger or something that makes you want to tune in for the next episode. Shows from soap operas to "Batman" presented a taste or little bit of what was going to happen, hoping you would see the program! BTW, this has nothing whatsoever to do with the Sylvester Stallone movie of the same name. Also, the references to bells and chimes refer to certain sound effects played at the end of certain programs.
