The Lyrics

I've had this "smoosh" floating around in my head for some time. When I heard about the death of Leonard Cohen, I had to get this online as soon as I could. By the way, look up the Spanish version by Il Divo, it's outstanding.
The Lord is God, omnipotent
His blessings are all heaven-sent
But you don't really know the Bible, do you?
Know this--His power never fails
Believe in Him, you shall prevail
Proclaim His glory daily, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

The kingdom's of the earth may fight
Beneath his Son shall all unite
Feel His eternal power flowing through you
His sacrifice unlocked the door
And He shall reign forevermore
Upon our lips the praise of Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

The King of Kings, the Lord of Lords
Hitch up the plow, cast down the sword
With justice and with mercy he shall rule you
We know that He'll return and then
The world shall be made new again
Let every living voice shout "Hallelujah"!

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah

This is excellent. It's not really a parody so much as an improvement on the original, taking it from a song that sounds religious until you actually listen to the words, to one with words that fit the feeling generated by the music. The only line that seems intended to be funny succeeds at being so: "But you don't really know the Bible, do you?"

Leonard Cohen asked the question "But you don't really care for music, do you?" In a way this could be interpreted as saying he knows the average listener won't put in the effort to understand what Cohen is writing and will misinterpret the lyrics. The popularity of "Hallelujah" as an all-occasion anthem, in fact depends on this lack of effort to listen closely and interpret correctly.
