The Lyrics

On August 26, 2013, a kid named Grant proudly posted on Facebook that he punched the face of another kid who left "under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance. Grant earned a one-week suspension but felt it was "worth it lol. love jesus". Story: http://cheezburger.com/6854927104 OS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9tKwSboJeg
Punch in the face! Are you insane?
Zealot, you give God a bad name!

(instrumental break)

You’re telling me he earned his fate:
The Pledge of Allegiance he dared to truncate!
Left out “God”, so you boxed his ear.
I’d bet Torquemada would stand and cheer!

Oh, you’re the holy one—yeah?
Oh, defending the Son—
(And) those who deny him you’ll beat up for fun?

Punch in the face ‘cause you’re inflamed?
You give God a bad name.
You’re playing God when you play that game!
You give God a bad name!
You give God…a bad name!

(brief instrumental break)

Wipe that smile off your lips!
Wipe his sweat off your fingertips!
You schoolboy jerk, you think you’re blessed?
A week in suspension should put that to rest!

So, you’re a Facebook star!
So, you’re so liked, you are!
(But) your bad-ass act could put you behind bars!

Punch in the face! And who’s to blame?
You give God a bad name.
You think that God’s gonna praise your name?
You give God a bad name.
You give God—no!

(instrumental break)

Arggh!
“Prophet of God!” Is that your claim?
You give God a bad name!
You hurt the church with your act of shame!
You give God a bad name!

“Soldier of Christ!”—or so you claim!
You give God a bad name!
A punch you sowed; should you reap the same?
You give God a bad name!

You don’t love.
You give God… (bad name)
You’re so tough!
You give God… (bad name)
You don’t love!
You give God… (bad name)
You’re too rough!
You give God… (bad name)

(fade to end)
Torquemada was a Grand Inquistor of the Spanish Inquisition in the 15th Century. I believe he was a fan of torture as a means of conversion.

Very good. All 4's. Would have been all 5's if, in the process of condemning the young, violent, religious idiot, you realized that his exclusivist behavior was stirred by a sham, tax-free church which purveys the existence of the ultimate Ignorance of Man: God. Heady stuff for this site.

Very spirited, and extra points for Torquemada reference. This was very, very good. We need more of this caliber posted on the site. Would love to see more from you.

Well said. In December 1999, Bill Maher did a Millennium All-Stars edition of "Politically Incorrect," and Paul Rodriguez, playing Torquemada, said, "Sorry about that" to Shelley Long playing Joan of Arc. Rod Steiger was also on and he was great as Mussolini.

BRAVO! I LOVE IT! Since when does God and nationalism/jingoism ever mix? It's all senseless to me - most people in America seem to think they're GREATER than God, not "under". As for "indivisible" then explain why people of certain arrogant attitudes like to bash different people. Intolerance rules today. There's plenty of people giving God a bad name. The "Islamic" terrorists are not Islamic. Israeli PM Rabin was killed by Jewish fanatics. Christian fanaticism and corruption is rampant. God doesn't hate "fags", He hates the evil that hateful "religious" groups do in His Name because they give Him a bad name. I'm very glad to see some people stand up to all this madness. It's been so easy to jeer at Iran's totalitarian "Muslim" regime, yet we need to look at the sickness engulfing America. 555555555555+ Cheers ad infinitum : )

I really liked your intelligently written parody. Many Christians throughout the centuries used force or violence in the names of their God, Christianity, or the Christian church. You kept up with my interest with what you were writing about, and how you were writing it. As a poet, I deal with topics, especially Christianity, its contradictions, and its hypocrites and persecutors. Keep up the writing. Take care.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written by a freethinker, in today's terms an agnostic. It did not originally contain the words "United States of America", let alone "God". As originally recited, the student was to raise his right arm at a 90 degree angle and point to the flag. True Christian conservatives should be very suspicious of this loyalty oath to a bankrupt, socialist, anti-Christian government.

Thanks for all your fervent comments! I suppose this parody hit more deeply than I expected! One correction: apparently the incident happened in 2012, not 2013, because most of the comments I've seen on websites featuring this Facebook post are dated late 2012.

I get so sick of atheists' smug attitude toward Christians then I read about people like the kid mentioned here and think "yeah... that's not good" righteous parody! 5's
