The Lyrics

Just a little clowning around...
He was a red-nosèd clown, he had humungous shoes on
She was the elephant cleaner
He poured ice water down the back of her blouson
In the heart of the big top arena
He had a funny reputation, had a glint in his eye
Ne'er missed with a hosepipe, missed with a pie
They had one thing in common
Liked to clown around
She said, Roll up! Roll up!
The Circus is in town

Life in the daft lane
People run away to this?
Life in the daft lane

Are you with me so far?

Mad overacting, up for the chase
The frequent impacting of a pie in the face
They knew all the right slapstick
They told all the right jokes
They fell back into water
They got utterly soaked
There was custard all around 'em, custard in between
She pretended not to notice (she'd an elephant to clean)
On every evening until after dark
They would laugh at the crowd who'd laugh at them fark about an'

Life in the daft lane
People run away to this?
Life in the daft lane
Life in the daft lane
Everyone takes the piss...
Life in the daft lane

Building was burning, flames getting higher
Clowns come with straws
Try an' put out the fire
She said, "time *my* baby took a turn on the dirt
'Cause he could douse the whole thing in one itty-bitty squirt"
He said, "Leave your Elly, 'cause they gotta have the aid
Of a big-footed, face-painted clown-fire brigade
They were rushing round the big top
The elephant gave chase
It was hilarious, at such a manic pace
And it was

Life in the daft lane
Slapstick make you lose your mind
Life in the daft lane
Life in the daft lane
Elephants - all the time
Life in the daft lane

Life in the daft lane
Life in the daft lane

{Blush}.. thank you, Alvin, for such kind words (even if you did miss out an apostrophe ;-) ). And the rest of you, too...

Your talent is no laughing matter, though that's what it produces. And, John Barry, don't call him Shirley.

Yeah, great clowning around with the original here. Seriously funny... especially liked "The frequent impacting of a pie in the face" and "(she'd an elephant to clean)".

(SOTM) You sure love to clown around, don't you? I couldn't give yuo all fives because I went to the circus recently and it's hard to compare to the real thing. Btu I loved your clever lyrics, and it actually was pretty funny. 544

(SOTM) Painted a pretty picture of the pivotal scene from Dumbo....clever stuff. Wish this story had an ending. :)

Well spotted, Ag: it wasn't really intentional, but it was the only elephantine circus act I could think of...

SOTM - There's no guarantee that it will still be there when you (whoever you are) read this, but I found the original song here:

Second time around I still like 'elephant to clean'. I'm also glad someone pointed out the Dumbo reference, that one sailed over my head first time. Great clowning around again.

Red Ant - April 30, 2006 - Report this comment
(SOTM) I haven't seen Dumbo or a circus in 15 years, but I remember the last circus I went to: "Everyone takes the piss" happened, literally, as one of the elephants let loose on the front 6 rows. I saw it all from binoculars, some 30+ rows up. Great work on a very good OS here Phil.

(SOTM) For a second there I thought the title was "Life in the Draft Lane" and figured it would be either about NASCAR or beer (basically the same thing). Boy, was I wrong...

(SOTM) Twisted and to-the-point, as always!
