The Lyrics

Oy vey, 1974 was a year for bad songs. "Having My Baby." "Billy Don't Be a Hero." "The Night Chicago Died." "Kung Fu Fighting." "I Honestly Love You." "Rikki, Don't Lose That Number." "I've Got the Music In Me." "Rock the Boat." "Thank God I'm a Country Boy." ("Thank God"? You're looking in the wrong direction there.) The Rolling Stones' weak cover of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." James Taylor & Carly Simon's massacre of "Mockingbird." Not to mention ABBA debuted in the U.S. No wonder Duke Ellington and Mama Cass Elliott died that year! But this song, which I actually like, as stupid songs go, it's been ripped more than most, including here on Amiright. Is that fair? Well, maybe...
(Link Wray's "Rumbling" guitar opening)

Goodbye to you, untroubled ears.
We've heard this song for over 30 years.
It drives some of us into trees.
And from sea to shining seas
has us begging on our knees.

Goodbye my ears, I want to die
every time this song comes across the sky
through radio, over the air.
Pretty girls everywhere
they wish this song wasn't there.

We say "Oy," hope it's done.
Don't you see, this song is shunned.
And the hills that we climbed
were to escape from this rhyme.

(Rumble...)

Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me.
This song, it drove me to insanity.
Why'd you not tell me it was wrong.
Too much time with this bad song.
Now I just can't get along.

Goodbye papa, it makes me cry
every time this song comes across the sky
through radio, over the air.
Little children everywhere
this song, it gives them such a scare.

We say "Oy," hope it's done.
Don't you see, this song is shunned.
Yeah, the lines in this song
we wish they would be all gone.
We say "Oy," hope it's done.
Don't you see, this song is shunned.
Yeah, the lines in this song
we wish they would be all gone.

(Rumble...)

Oy vey, Michelle, 'twas Number 1.
How could all those people be so dumb?
This song always gets me down.
When seventy-four came around
felt like crawling in the ground.

Oy vey, Michelle, this song, oh why
did it have to come across the sky
through radio, over the air?
A place it's never heard, somewhere?
Someday, won't you join me there?

We say "Oy," hope it's done.
Don't you see, this song is shunned.
Yeah, the notes Jacks could reach
would sound better sung by Screech.
We say "Oy," hope it's done.
Don't you see, this song is shunned.
Yeah, the notes Jacks could reach
would sound better sung by Screech.
We say "Oy," hope it's done.
Don't you see, this song is shunned.
Yeah, the lines in this song
we wish they would be all gone.
We say "Oy," hope it's done.
Don't you see, this song is shunned.
And the hills that we climbed
were to escape from this rhyme.
And I like it! I guess that makes me weird. Yeah. THAT is what makes me weird.

I'm with Alvin on this one. I didn't start liking new music again until sometime in the mid to late 80s.
