The Lyrics

I have sailed a million miles,I have sailed both night and day
I have sailed the coasts and oceans from the Baltic to Biscay
I have been both crew and skipper, and navigator, right
But hardest thing in sailing is to know how to survive

Well, most people do just pilotage, they never dare to leave
the coastline off their sight for good, and they never do achieve
The title of the voyager, who cross the oceans deep
But the trick to keep the cruising safe is simple it can be:

Keep yourself awake! Keep yourself awake!
Don't fall asleep on helm or tiller
Give yourself a break!

Now keeping watch is duty of seafarers everywhere
And sleeping in the lulling boat is pain when you are there
So when the night has fallen and the only light is stars
Your duty is to steer the boat, not hang out in the bars

And when your watch is over, then go straight there in your bunk
Just try to sleep whenever you have obligations done
Just learn to take a catnap, and sleep whene'er you can
You're little use when tired and you risk your fellow man -

Keep yourself awake! Keep yourself awake!
Don't fall asleep on helm or tiller
Give yourself a break!

Keep yourself awake! Keep yourself awake!
Don't fall asleep on helm or tiller
Give yourself a break!

Great take on one of my FAVORITE Queen songs(they don't play their older stuff enough on the radio, which is MILES above their commercial "pop" stuff...)

Susanna - Wonderful advice...and an even better parody! ;D

Let's say I learned all that the hard way last summer. I thought I could keep regular sleep/awake pattern while cruising. Didn't succeed - I simply had to learn to take catnaps every time I was off-duty. It is especially important to keep awake while on deck watch - falling asleep on helm can cause a collision if other marine traffic is nearby.
