The Lyrics

(Cue understated electric organ intro)

If I butchered this whole stanza
Would you even give a sh*t
Cause you're just waiting for the GUI-tars
But a full instrumental they won't permit
And if I strayed from the rules, girl
They wouldn't let us in the game
So I must sing a few words now
Cause this rule we cannot change (oh, oh, oh, oh)
And this rule we cannot change
And this rule we cannot change
Lord knows we're constrained

Why, why they make us sing stuff
Cause we ain't Dylan or Voltaire
But please dont be too impatient
Cause Lord knows we're halfway there
And if you'll stay thru this couplet
We'll no longer be constrained
Cause we are freed from the words now
And from the words we are unchained (oh,oh,oh,oh)
And the words are not our chains
And the words we will not change
Lord knows, they wont change
Lord, help me, they wont change

Lord, we're unchained
Time to grind vibe .. Free Bird, yeah

(Damn, seems I've stirred up a hornet's nest here. Apparently, some of the original members of Skynyrd are demanding equal time to respond to my meta-parody with their own counter meta-parody using their song "You Got That Right." What have I got myself into here?)

Well I heard lots of Yankees
They think they'll put us down
We dont write like Dylan and
We dont dance like Brown
Well we're not that way
We just boogie along
We like to grind our ax all night
When it comes to words
Dont give a shite

You got that right
Said you got that write
You sure got that right

Seems so long since we done Free Bird
Guitar prowess became our watchword
Seem we were born with a Stratocast bone
'Till our time's up, we'll give 'em hell
Wont be cowed by no CML

You got that, Guy
Said you got that, Guy
Well you got that, Guy
Sure got that right

Tried every axe in our life
Ones we liked we shred them twice
You got that right

Powering our chords just to finish this song
You best prepare, boy, or be swept along
Here comes that ol' Fenderin' jones once again
We like to play this ax real tight
Comes to words,
We dont give a shite
You got that right
Said, you got that write
Well you got that right
We sure got that right

Me loves a high concept, meta-parody. No comment on the long. long, long guitar solo or the ubiquity of the tune in classic rock radio/cover bands? Hehe, you likely respect the Skynyrd too much to diss them along the way. Fair enough. 555

I definitely respect the guitar outro at the end of "You Got That Right", Ag. Boy, that was a MIGHTY FINE a-pickin' and a-shreddin'! ... I'll bet they got at least ten dollah for that ;-D
