The Lyrics

The idea of this song popped on my mind on Tallinn-Helsinki ferry years ago. It was about the nutcase "pastor" Fred Phelps, running the Westboro Baptist Church, also known as God Hates Fags, ranting on Finland. Our current (then newly elected) president, Ms. Tarja Halonen, had acted as the lawyer of Organization for Sexual Equality (SETA), the Finnish lesbigay organization, in her youth (she's straight, though). He threatened to come to Finland to burn the Finnish flag in front of the Presidential palace. The very next day he announced that, Finnish hackers (this is the land of Linux anyway) cracked his website and replaced each page with a Finnish flag. It is an accomplishment on itself on behalf of Rev. Phelps to unite our army reservists, hackers and sexual minorities against him. Needless to say, I find the Calvinist religion extremely repulsive.
Big screw, keep revolving!
Carry me home once again
Visiting Tallinn is kind of fun, but
I miss my own countrymen
(This ship will get me home again)

I heard Fred Phelps ranting about her
Yup, he sure was bitter like lye
I hope Fred Phelps will remember
we have our own ways to make him cry -

Sweet home, good old Finland
and the Flag, Cross of blue -
Sweet home, good old Finland
would I ever desert you?

In Helsinki we love the President
We proudly fly our Blue Cross Flag
Now Calvin sounds in my ears like Hitler
and we don't care if someone's fag

Sweet home, good old Finland
and the Lion coat of arms -
Sweet home, good old Finland
we'll keep you off the way of harms

Finnish people won't take it lightly (BOOM BOOM BOOM!)
if you insult things us dear
So keep your filthy hands now off us
or we will make you understand (why it's unhealthy to come near)

Sweet home, good old Finland
and the Baltic so blue -
Sweet home, good old Finland
Returning back home to you

Love the sentiment and the way you tell the story, though I see some minor problems with pacing/sentence structure: "off the way of harms" and "things us dear" seem bizarre to the average English speaker. 4-5-5...

Neil Young's about to bag you for this - "Northen Man - better change your way-ays..."

Okay, I must admit I somewhat overshot with the lyrics. i went a bit overtly patriotic when writing the words. Still, what Phelps did, was extremely insultive, and cracking and defacing his website was, IMO, the best reprisal - especially as each and every page on that site was replaced by the Finnish flag. Non-violent and witty.

I read Neil Young's "Alabama" words. IMO Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd described the both sides of the same issue on different viewpoints. RVZ treated Neil Young nicer on his song than I did FP. But if the information of what and who Fred Phelps really is, at http://blank.org/addict ,is correct, IMO he deserved it.

Susanna: Yikes, you manage to get to the Finals of the World Cup of Hockey and you get all uppity. Wow. But nailing Fred Phelps (an appropriate analogy) is enough to get you fives even if the song wasn't worth it (it is). Stuart: Neil ripping a "Northern Man"? Uh, he's kinda northern himself.

Point of order. Phelps is not a Calvinist. He actually is his own religion that he made up and his family members make up most of the congregation. He is a lone psychopath. Even John Calvin would probably distance himself from this looney. Just your friendly neighborhood fact checker.

Psychopath, indeed! I think Phelps's personality profile fits exactly on Cleckley and Hare profile of psychopath. The http://blank.org/addict article, "Addicted to hate", is extremely gruesome reading of this man.

Finland, Finland, Finland! Oh hurrah for Finnish hackers! And you're right, he deserved it. He deserved worse! I'm not a great fan of George Bush but burning an American flag would be offensive. Why is a Finnish flag any different?
As for this - In Helsinki we love the President
We proudly fly our Blue Cross Flag
Now Calvin sounds in my ears like Hitler
and we don't care if someone's fag
The rhyme made me smile :D Good job!

Mr P. is agreat liar and a five-point calvinist satanist! He should clean up by Americas own doorsteps while attacking the Swedish king Carl XVI Gustaf! What about the parody, of that Alabama Song? Mrs Tarja Halonen is agreat liar too. A Socialist-Fascist not accepted by all the people in Finland!
