The Lyrics

Seven comes eleven... Please substitute 'profound' for 'funny' in the funny vote category..
In the second world war, Japanese caught us cold,
And they attacked on December seven.
They snuck in and dealt blows, with our Navy exposed,
Sneak attack they sure gave us a "what for".
And the death toll was eleven-seven-seven. (1177)

There's a shrine for them all, on the first day of war,
'Cause we know that these wounds are slow healing.
And the bombs how they shook, this is war and it stings,
But our resolve was just not to give in.
Ooh, the ships went under,
Ooh, the ships went under.

Let us please not forget, when we're put to the test,
After spirits quit crying and grieving.
Some forgot of all these things, the smoke and debris,
Many voices are demanding booking.
Ooh, The ships went under,
Ooh, and the ships went down-under,

Now these monsters need tuned, so lets do it real soon,
Or these vipers will lead us to treason.
Hey this isn't "Red Dawn", but we won't stand long,
'Cause our freedom is just what they're after.

And as they hastle on the talk shows, hey there's no harm now,
There's just no vaccine for the obscene.
Yes there are new maths we can apply to get one sum,
Games with time won't change the road we're on.
And the ships went under.

The numbers summing to a plateau, so you should know,
To numbers seven and eleven,
They're lucky numbers and did you know, that as dates go,
They match the dead on that ship they did in.

And as the middle east explodes,
These dates are matching that death toll,
It's just a crazy number show,
It's funny how these numbers go,
The memories are growing cold,
Both times they caught us off our guard,
And when the dust clears out at last,
When numbers sum and buildings fall,
Then we take stock and count the toll.

They attacked on September eleven.

In accordance with your own custom, Guy, I shall consider the "How Funny" category to be, in this case, more of a "How Profound" category. So 555, and well done.

Chills up my spine...never considered the date/death toll.

Profound indeed. Very well done, Guy. I pray that we will all have reason to be happy in this new year.

It was profound, and a very good match for the original. There's something about Led Zep that lends itself to war scenes. But the death toll from Pearl Harbor was closer to 2300. And what's "hastle"? Hassle, or hustle? After 62 years, my grandmother still hates the Japanese, except for Hideki Matsui. And finally, keep in mind that those responsible for 12-7 were held accountable. Those responsible for 9-11 remain at large... or is Osama already in a "spider hole," waiting to be 2004's October surprise?

They don't have to be funny if they're good like this.

MP - Sorry that it wasn't more plain but I was referring to the death toll on the USS Arizona. It is the only ship in Pearl Harbor with a shrine or memorial. The toll was indeed 1177. Please reference:

Thanks all for your votes and supporting comments. I had my doubts about this when I wrote it last night but your commentary tells me otherwise. .

Good job, Guy. Even though I don't know the original song, this was very well written and put together.

Well done, as always. (As an anti-Bee Gee, I've been Dirito-less of late.) Would you believe me if I told you I got the Pearl Harbor DVD as an xmas gift a few years ago and have yet to open it? I've always used the "how funny" vote subjectively as a grade of either "how satirical" or "how passionate" - and I'm sure most other readers also are creative with their votes under this heading. BTW, congrats if you're a Cowboys fan - always loved Parcells. I'm pulling for the Ravens, think that Philly will end up playing NE in the Super Bowl but I won't bet against Favre or KC.
