The Lyrics

In 1974, NFL Films boss Steve Sabol was reviewing films of the Oakland Raiders, then viewed as the NFL's lovable rogues and misfits, and was inspired to write a poem about them: "The autumn wind is a pirate... " He showed it to Raiders owner Al Davis, who loved it, saying, "This is what the Oakland Raiders are all about." Sabol then showed it to John Facenda, the narrator for their films at the time and a Philadelphia news anchor -- the Sabol family is from Philly, and NFL Films' headquarters, including its vast film library, is in the Philly suburb of Mount Laurel, New Jersey -- and Facenda read "The Autumn Wind," and made it a legend. I've rewritten it for my favorite hockey team, the New Jersey Devils, who play their home games in the Prudential Center in downtown Newark. And who, like the Raiders, have won 3 titles in their sport, and now seem to be getting their act together after a long drought.
The Winter Wind is a demon
on the Passaic River’s shore.
In scarlet and black he makes his attack
and chills you to the core.

His home named for insurance
which you are going to need.
He’ll shoot and score and check you to the boards
and enjoy it when you bleed.

He is strong of mind and shoulder
and fleet upon the skate
This creature from Jersey will show no mercy
as he consigns you to your fate.

The Winter Wind is a Devil
a creature you know well.
Wear Ranger blue, it’s doom for you
as he sends you to hockey hell.
