The Lyrics

This upcoming season will mark the 35th anniversary of The Promise, in which Joe Namath told the world that the New York Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III--and delivered on his promise, too! (That was also the year the two cities faced each other in another championship round and New York won again--the Amazin' Miracle Mets over the Orioles in the World Series.)
They're still talking about it, 1969
I don't know a lot cause I wasn't alive
I don't play much football, but boy if I could
They'd love me on Broadway and in Hollywood

If I played receiver, but then again, no
Or a man who throws passes just like Broadway Joe
I hear it a lot, and they would say, What a team!
The 69 Jets in the white and green

And Namath told everybody that New York would win
He may've been crazy but he still got his win
I know the story, I know the story and I know every word
How wonderful that was, the Jets shocked the world

In Super Bowl III, the Colts took them on
But the Jets would make good on his promise so strong
And the image is still fresh, as I wrote this song
It's for fans like you who keep it real long

So excuse me forgetting, but what should I do?
This town has been draped in the green and the blue
Anyway, the thing is, what I really mean
They must've been the greatest football team

And Namath told everybody that New York would win
He may've been crazy but he still got his win
I know the story, I know the story and I know every word
How wonderful that was, the Jets shocked the world

I know the story, I know the story and I know every word
How wondeful that was, the Jets shocked the world
