Song Parodies -> "Blair on Mars?"

Original Song Title:

"Life on Mars?"

 (MP3)
Original Performer:

David Bowie

Parody Song Title:

"Blair on Mars?"

Parody Written by:

Rick

The Lyrics

Blair on Mars? attempts to follow Life on Mars? as closely as possible word for word. The rhyming is important and has been retained pretty well in the parody version. Blair on Mars? was inspired not only by Bowie's lyrics to Life on Mars? but by Bowie's amazing 1973 video for the song in which I imagined British Prime Minister Blair in the bright green suit as worn by Bowie (with a white-out for background), singing his own parody about himself and his nation, and striking similar poses as Bowie did. The gentle mockery in the parody version sums up a lot of the public viewpoint of P.M. Blair's tenure in office. He relinquishes it at the end of June after 10 years, or more. Gordon Brown is his successor.
It's a God-awful small affair
To Tony Blair of the mousy hair
But his country is yelling no
The Prime Minister's gotta go
But his friends are nowhere to be seen
As he walks in his New Labour dream
To his retreat for a clearer view
And he's hooked to the critics' scream
For his reign is a maddening bore
They've lived it ten years or more
He could grin in the eyes of fools
As he asks them to focus on

Labour fighting to enhance all
Oh man! Look at those missiles go
It's the shock and awe show
Take a look at the lawmen
Serving up the bomb lies
Oh man! Wonder if you'll ever know
It's all Tony's show
Is Tony Blair on Mars?

It's on America's tortured road
Mister Blair has gone up a load
Now the papers have struck to blame
'Cos Ken is on sale again
See the lies in their million torts
From Iraqi to the no-fault clause
Cool Britannia is 'bout to drown
So they'll hover round Gordon Brown
For my reign is a maddening bore
They've lived it ten years or more
It's about to be lived again
As I ask you to focus on

Labour fighting to enhance all
Oh man! Look at those missiles go
It's the shock and awe show
Take a look at the lawmen
Serving up the bomb lies
Oh man! Wonder if you'll ever know
It's all Tony's show
Is Tony Blair on Mars?
Ken refers to a left-wing politician who became Mayor of London (for Americans out there).
