The Lyrics

When Solomon died and his son, Rehoboam (ree-ho-BO-am, became king, Rehoboam "prepared not his heart to seek the Lord." To draw his attention to the matter, God empowered Shishak of Egypt to help himself to various artifacts from the Temple, including the shields made of gold. Rehoboam did not have the wealth of his father, so the best he could do – apart from repenting to God, which he did not do – was to construct replacement shields with brass. They served the same function adequately, but the glory was not in the new shields.
Egypt had a king… One day he stole
He walked off… with the shields of gold
Rehoboam not… real big on class
Forged in their place… shields made of brass

Second Chronicles… chapt' twelve verse nine
Solomon's son …brass was all he could find
It seemed like the real thing… but you I remind
Glory is gone… 'twas not the design

Solomon
David left him billions to build God a house
Gold in all directions 'twas a worthy cause
Rehoboam lost it 'cuz he did not prepare
His heart to seek you, Lord.

Once I had a heart… it was on fire
Win another soul… my one desire
Shined like the real gold… today alas
Sin's done its work… it’s a heart of brass

Lord, restore
My first heart that I had when I asked you for
Your forgiveness from that sin I now deplore
I give you now my heart of brass

Restore the gold, your first glory surpass.

[vocalize]

Once we had a heart… it was on fire
Win another soul… our one desire
Shined like the real gold… today alas
Sin's done its work… they are hearts of brass

[vocalize]
