The Lyrics

Gore Vidal, October 3, 1925 – July 31, 2012. I went to hear him speak in 1981, during which he riffed on—among other things—the U.S. and some of its discontents. In the Q&A session, a woman asked, “Mr. Gore, if you find so much fault with the United States, why do you live here?” To which Vidal replied: “I don’t. I live in Los Angeles.”
Gore, of the greatest wits the world has known—
he tweaked the twits who blather and intone.
Gore was complicated man, I’d say;
Gore lived a long life. . .novels, essays, plays.

Gore’s time had come to go,
and now we’ll hear him no more.
His writings were wide and sweeping. . .
literary world is weeping.

Long did he live. . .wit wicked and sublime:
his words could be as corrosive as lime.

And, no, his work will never bore;
a long time will it endure.
So let’s raise a glass to Gore.

First I thought this was gonna be about Al, or about running with bulls; forgot about poor Vidal. :(

Thanks for the bulls idea, Merry.

What Merry said about expectations, mostly Al ... Love TOS (the John Gary cover, IIRC), and while not a fan of a lot of Gore (no pun intended), "Julian" was a wonderful and controversial work rife with iconoclasm, as it detailed the ugly back-story to the arrival of Christian dominance of the Roman Empire, which played a large part in the empire's downfall.
      The Emperor Julian may have been assassinated by one of his generals, a Christian who did not approve of Julian's tolerance of all religions. Oh, the irony. If you haven't read it, it's a must-read.

I read about Gore Vidals epic tiffs with Truman Capote, John Updike, William F. Buckley and others. Too young in the 60's to follow his debates with Buckley (the intellectual flipside of Ali/Frazier?), but apparently fisticuffs were threatened towards Vidal at one point.

The incident you're referring to, Brock, occurred at the Democratic Convention of 1968 where Buckley and Gore were doing TV commentary. At one point, Gore called Buckley a "Pro crypto Nazi" and Buckley responded with "Listen you queer, stop calling me a crypto Nazi or I'll sock you in the goddamned face"

I nearly didn’t click on this one as I, like the others, thought it was going to be about US politics. Glad I did though – especially liked the “Long” to “lime” lines.

Hi John. Still leading the charge I assume with your signature syllable-matching. Yes Gore was a one-off, unlike his namesake. He loved JFK, but hated him for his handling of the Cuban missile crisis - the opposite of most republicans
