Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"The Fat Again Rag"

Parody Written by:

Rick Duncan

The Lyrics

When you parody Professor Tom, you better show "great respect". Philbo inspired me to try. I met Mr. Lehrer once, didn't seem a bit interested in his old songs. We'll have to carry on for him.
First you find some food that's great
Then you get a giant plate
Grab a fork with no delay
And eat buffet, eat buffet, eat buffet

Gluttony is not a big sin
When the Chinese year of pig's in
That aroma beckons
Goin' in for seconds
Doin' the fat again rag

Shove it through that old intestine wall
Mashed potatos, chicken breast 'n all
There's a guy with the right attitude
Chowin' down to be a fatter dude
Call the guy cause he's the waiter
Order more, save some for later
Four, six, eight, ten
You're today's American!

So get down with all your chow
Make some room in there somehow
Pop those buttons on your vest
And then ingest, then ingest, then ingest

Rub those stretch marks with some liniment
Just don't eat that final dinner mint
You know I love ya
There's so much more of ya

It's automatic that
Eatin' erratic an'
Doin' the fat again rag

Oink!

555, and coincidence time again, Rick - I was at a rehearsal of The Concord Player's upcoming production of "1776" last night, and I don't know who started it, but a bunch of us Congressmen started singing "The Vatican Rag".

Rick D - don't recall how Tom Lehrer stuff goes...it totally eludes me right now. Maybe I'll see if I can find it on the net somewhere. It looks like you and some other folks are starting to do a bunch of his stuff now.

Doing song parody is hard enough. It's even harder to parody a song that is already funny. I genuflect before you, Rick. 5-5-5

Tom only wrote and performed in the late 50's, early 60's. He mocked the popular music of his day and previous eras.He only put out 3 albums, plus a few "educational" songs. They are all available in the book "Too Many Songs By Tom Lehrer", which include a few updates and new lyrics. But what is amazing is that most of them hold up very well in these times. He pretty much abandoned that career in favor of teaching, but anyone who writes funny music considers him to be the master.

...that's because he *IS* the master ;-) And a very well-worked parody, Rick.

...and a vote replaced. I was given the Lehrer triple-CD for Christmas, so have been listening to all of 'em all over again. You should have seen my son's face listening to "New Math" this morning on the way to school :-)
