The Lyrics

For those of you who have not had the dubious pleasure of serving in the U.S. Army, you might need to know the following: (1)The "SDI" is the Senior Drill Instructor, traditionally, the biggest, meanest, SOB you'll ever come in contact with--more so that even your own drill sergeant. (2) All exercises in the Army were assigned numbers, so that the drill sergeant could yell our "PT Exercise 9" (Physical Training Exercise 9), and all the recruits would know immediately what to do. (This saved excessive wear and tear on the drill sergeants' brains, no doubt).
I took my troubles to the SDI
You know that sergeant--he's a real swell guy
He looked at my face and he made a nasty sign
He said--"What you need is--PT Exercise 9."

I told him that I was a flop at drill
I fixed my bayonet but I can't kill
I get out of step when we're marching in line
He said--"What you need is--PT Exercise 9."

He bent down and turned around
And flipped me the bird
He called me every dirty name
That I've ever heard
He picked me up and threw me
Clear across the latrine--
That guy just wasn't ornery--he's downright mean!

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started cleaning everything in sight.
But when I cleaned the spot
Off the SDI's behind
He said--"What you need is--PT Exercise 9."

(Repeat and fade, "PT Exercise 9")
The last I heard, these lyrics were being sung as a marching cadence at Ft. Ord, California, before the base was finally shut down in the 1990's.
