Dorian is one of the seven medieval church modes. The others are Ionian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian. . .all named after regions in the Greek empire. In the key of C, C-C is Ionian (or major) D-D is Dorian; E-E is Phrygian; F-F is Lydian; G-G is Mixolydian; A-A is Aeolian (or natural minor); B-B is Locrian. The same pattern works for any major scale.

Now let's say that you're in C--no sharps or flats in sight.
Instead of C to C, go D to D, moving right.
