The Lyrics

I'm simply tired of people misusing the word irony. Hopefully this can help clear things up for the unenlightened masses.
When I think of misconceptions in this world the first must truly be
Misinterpretaions, Irony.
And aided by pop culture with Alanis there insulting me
Those things, in fact, aren't, irony.

Betwixt what's expected and occurs there's an incongruity
That's the definition. Irony.
And though those things may suck and they are unfortunate I agree
That does not constitute irony.

There's a prime example. Irony.
When Romeo and Juliet kill themselves when they'd planned to be

Great parody, but I'm said to say that one of my pet peeves is the misuse of "hopefully," as, regrettably, your top comment exemplifies. 5s for the enlightening parody, though.

This is great, Mike...and if you're American, you get double points! 555
Paul Robinson - July 12, 2005 - Report this comment
Very, very clever...and apt, as well...5's ~ ~ ~

Great song, although I'd have to disagree with you on Alanis' efforts... a song about irony that doesn't give a single valid example? Is that not the very definition of the word? 5's :-D
Michael Pacholek - July 12, 2005 - Report this comment
A great idea not quite well executed. And yet...

ha - very clever comment, Adam!
Yes, Alanis, saying it's ironic that it rained on your wedding day is NOT ironic, but if you were marrying a weather-forecaster, it would have been

nice idea, Mike - as Kristof suggested, In Australia, there's an oft-stated belief that Americans don't get irony, and when Alanis's song came out, our whole nation rolled its collective eyes - 555

How weird, I was just listening to Ironic today! Irony? Nope, just coincidence. I always got bugged by this too. Greatest parody today! Except maybe "My Aroma", and I always thought that Romeo and Juliet was an ironic story.

Got my Recommended Daily Allowance of Irony!

Excellent.

The whole nation? That explains why John Howard keeps getting elected.

I love this parody and have always thought of that song as "Pathetic" ( for her misuse of irony ) instead of "Ironic".

I'll show you irony.

[SOTM] Nothing ironic about my vote 555

(SOTM) Good parody, although I have no examples. 5's
Charlie Decker - August 09, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Actually, Alanis' song is highly ironic. Unless I am very much mistaken, it is ironic that a song called "Ironic" has nothing ironic contained in it.

BTW, Stuart, you Ozzies mistakenly rolled your eyes at America when the song came out...Alanis is Canadian. Silly hosers not understanding irony!

Great parody, by the way, Mike!

SOTM: This is one of my wife's biggest pet peeves, so I got a kick out of this.
Tim Mayfield - August 19, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) I can say that irony was defined to me as 'an unwanted and strange coincidence'. As in "I just placed all of my chips on #27 and it ended up on #26. How Ironic." The focus is on things that don't match your 'desired' result.
Red Ant - August 20, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Has an entry before inspired so much talk about a different OS? Her song is "Ironic", her examples are not irony though as correctly mentioned here. Great job guys.
Peter Andersson - August 21, 2005 - Report this comment
SOTM - I heard the other OS we talk about here just the other day; isn't it acoustic (now)?

(SOTM) No irony here -- I expected this to be good and it was. :)

(SOTM) In Oz, we're said to be too ironic - to the point where we're mistakenly taken seriously, and sorry Charlie - I had no idea she was a Canook, and great comment about a song about irony without a single example of it - and Tim, I dunno but I think your definition coincides with Alanis's

great idea for a parody Mike, although I think your second stanza definition should incude the inherent black humour that must be involved, and of fate having a private laugh at one's expense
Phil Alexander - August 27, 2005 - Report this comment
Super- I was half hoping this would get the definition wrong... 'cause that would be truly ironic ;-)
Arwen - August 28, 2005 - Report this comment
SOTM--excellent in every way...not only was your pacing perfect, but your message was FABulous...and definitely after my own heart...=)
