The Lyrics

This game was played in daylight, not at night, but it was a dark day in northern Ohio. Not that I'm from there or a Browns fan. I just thought this was a good idea for a song. Since the Browns won the NFL Title in 1964, no Cleveland sports team has won a World Championship. Some came so close... this one hurts them the most.
Virgil Caine is my name
and I ride on the Blue Line train.
Commuting there by the Lake
I see the Dawg Pound, and my heart just breaks.
In the autumn of '86, we were ready to work all of our tricks.
But on that day, our hopes fell.
It was a time I remember oh so well...

The night he drove on the Cleveland Browns!
Our heads were pounding, ringing!
The night he drove on the Cleveland Browns!
And all the people were singing!
They went, "Waaaaaaaa..."

Back with my wife in Shaker Heights
I will wake up screaming on many nights.
She will ask, "What's wrong today?"
"There goes damn John Elway!"
Now, I don't mind, it's understood
that these days, the Browns are no good.
I know 'round here life can be hard.
But he should never have taken 98 yards!

The night he drove on the Cleveland Browns!
Our heads were pounding, ringing!
The night he drove on the Cleveland Browns!
And all the people were singing!
They went, "Waaaaaaaa..."

Like my father before me, I'm a Cleveland man.
And like the old-time teams, my Browns took a stand.
Oh, I was just 18, but bless my soul
came Elway's drive and the Karlis field goal.
I swear by the blood that's in my feet
someday the Browns will avenge this defeat...

The night he drove on the Cleveland Browns!
Our heads were pounding, ringing!
The night he drove on the Cleveland Browns!
And all the people were singing!
They went, "Waaaaaaaa..."

Cheer up, Virgil, things could be worse ... you could be a Yankees fan instead.

Can it really be 19 years since "the drive"? Young Virgil is now old Virgil and still waiting for the Browns to avenge the defeat. Good reminiscence, MP.
