The Time of Finals

Hello Facebook, my old friend
I've come to stalk with you again
Because a deadline softly creeping
Has prevented me from sleeping
And that deadline that was planted in my brain still remains
Within the time of finals.

In restless nights I write alone
All my reading is postponed
'Neath a flickering fluorescent lamp
Sitting so long that my legs have cramped
When my eyes are stabbed by the flash of the dawning light
There went the night
I take a nap in defiance

And sleeping in Lamont I saw
Ten thousand students, maybe more
Students writing while weeping
Drinking coffee without sleeping
Students wearing sweatpants and not washing their hair
But no one cared
Within the time of finals

Fools, said I, you do not know
Problematizing only grows
Heed my warning, I beseech you
Don't let finals time defeat you
Just save your Word doc and exit your Excel
You will do well
You will survive your finals

And then I woke up and I prayed
That the prof would curve the grade
As the clock struck out its warning
To my thesis only forming
And the clock said, the words of the paper aren't written on Facebook walls
Thou shalt not stall
Within the time of finals
