The Lyrics

I'M DEFENDING MY REPUTATION

I have to be strong, mustn't I?
And prove them all wrong, mustn't I?
And though I've done many things in my life of which I'm not proud,
I feel that it's time to do something, and shout it out loud.

I'm defending my reputation,
As it's something that I've treasured all my life.
I resent their insinuation
That I did a bunk and cheated on my wife.
For this scandal is untrue you see,
And something that is new to me.
My wife is very true to me,
She wouldn't dare say boo to me.
She always sticks like glue to me,
And I would get what's due to me,

Perhaps I ought to think things out again.

I've always played straight, haven't I?
And kept a clean slate, haven't I?
I admit that sometimes I've been out with the lads on my own.
But the things I got up to, I don't think have ever been shown.

I'm defending my reputation,
I would hate to think the lads have let me down.
It's an awkward situation,
If the stories in their locker got around.
It is true I like to have a drink
And hear the pints of beer go clink.
The landlady then gives a wink,
Which leaves me on the very brink.
And if my missus gets a chink
She'll go and throw the kitchen sink!

Perhaps I ought to think things out again.

I like a small bet, once a week.
It's all that I get, once a week.
I do like the greyhounds but sometimes I will bet on a horse.
I may back a winner, but more often I'm a loser, of course!

I'm defending my reputation,
And I hate to see good money down the drain.
But I have this fascination
Even if my aspirations are in vain.
There are times I get a little tip
So get in car and make a trip.
To calm my nerves I need a nip,
And see my loss as just a blip.
I feel that I deserve a whip,
But then I'm told just get a grip!

Perhaps I ought to think things out again.

What happens if I foul it up?
It could be that I foul it up.
I'd always regret if I ever made a fool of myself.
If the missus found out, I just know I'd be left on the shelf.

I'm defending my reputation,
As I've always thought myself above the rest.
It would be an irritation,
If I ever thought I couldn't be the best.
I want everyone to look at me
And not to throw the book at me.
Don't know what they expect of me
But they should show respect for me.
I'd like my wife to look at me
And say she'd like to cook for me.
But if my friends should come to me
And say that they can see through me.

I really ought to think things out again!

You got someone who doesn't like you much, Glynne--this wasn't bad at all. Screw the hater(s).

Excellent stuff - I like the OS (have also done it once or twice), and this was a super addition to the oevre. It's a shame these Trumpistas (well, it's probably only one - ironic that they're complaining about vote-rigging these days) can't see past their hatred of anyone who doesn't like their idol.
