The Lyrics

Another Dylan/baseball parody? Actually, I never liked his original. Richie Havens' version is one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard, so much so that you forget it's supposed to be one of the great Dylan put-downs. "King Omar" is Met general manager Omar Minaya. He just introduced to the media Pedro Martinez, the Mets' first real ace since Dwight Gooden hurt his shoulder about 15 years ago. And his big day was ruined by news that the team that rules his division, the Atlanta Braves, signed free agent pitcher Tim Hudson; and that the team that rules his city, the New York Yankees, traded for Randy Johnson. Johnson, a.k.a the Big Unit, is 41 pitches like he's 33. Pedro, a.k.a. the Dominican Diva and the Little Punk, is 33 but pitches 41 once he passes the 100-pitch mark. And while it CAN, in this song's second verse, "hurl" does NOT mean "pitch."
Nobody feels any shame
tonight as I arrive at the game.
Everybody knows
the Diva's got new clothes.
Lately he pitches
for the team that blows
with a black hat atop his Jheri curls.

And they think just like the Yankees.
And they talk tough just like the Yankees.
And they spend just like the Yankees.
But they play just like the New York Mets.

Ah, King Omar, he's my friend.
I do believe he wants to win again.
Nobody's got to guess
that Flushing can't be blessed
'til they find out that they're in distress
with their wind, and errors to make you hurl.

And they think just like the Yankees.
And they talk tough just like the Yankees.
And they spend just like the Yankees.
But they play just like the New York Mets.

It was raining from the first.
Mets smell like liverwurst.
Pedro came in here.
And the long-time curse hurt.
But what's worse
are those planes in here.
Who can stay in here?

Ain't it clear
that he, oh, he can't fit.
I believe the Mets just ought to quit.
And when we meet again
as the new season ends
please don't let on that you can't contend.
You're still hungry.
Yanks are champs of the world.

And you think just like the Yankees.
And you talk tough just like the Yankees.
And you spend just like the Yankees.
But you play just like the New York Mets.
You play just like the New York Mets.
You play... just like...
