Original Song Title:

"Mother Matilda"

Original Performer:

Pink Floyd

Parody Song Title:

"Mocking ‘Matilda’"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

There once was a calypso man,
who sang a song about a scam.
Recorded in 1953,
it became ripe for parody—
a spoofing was in store.

The parodist took the air,
changed the name and went from there…
writing.
Altered the title and the lines;
result was funny, if not sublime.

Many listeners it did amuse…
he’s touched by the parody muse
On the charts the song climbed far up,
going way past number 9.
’bout a girl who’s scheming
to give her guy a fleecing.
And she did.

In the revision of the tune,
over the tailor she would swoon.
She took the money, then they were gone.
That tailor really hurt his pride…
lapels too wide; he’s sore!
Also, poor.

Thanks for joining in! Unfortunately I don’t know anything about this song that you’re talking about. Still seems like you did a good job as always I just don’t get it...

Wow, John, you are gonna puzzle many people with this, but I grokked it. Here's what you are referring to, I believe -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C-DShN82mc (Matilda, by Harry Belafonte) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yvtRCWIUWc (My Zelda, by Allan Sherman). Hope to see you at the next OWN, John!

Subject matter flew over my head, but I really enjoyed this crash course in comedy music history. 5's all the live long Day-O!
