Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"Angels In the Mourning"

Parody Written by:

Michael Pacholek

The Lyrics

The original was written by Chip Taylor, who also wrote "Wild Thing." I can't remember who recorded it first, but it was on Cameo-Parkway Records, which went bankrupt in 1968, and they were stuck with a song they couldn't distribute. Somehow, Merilee Rush got ahold of it, and covered it. So did Nina Simone, Juice Newton, the Pretenders and many others. The Los Angeles/California/Anaheim Angels had 41 years of horrible luck even out in one season. That was then. This is now.
There'll be no defense of your flag, so keep it close beside your heart.
And you'll just watch your ballclub sag, no matter which pitcher you start.
You have no advantage at home. You're losing games in your ballpark.

Again, the Angels are in mourning, Angels.
Big losing streak, you can believe me, baby.
Again, the Angels are in mourning, Angels.
You slowly fall away, bye, bye.

Maybe your light bulbs will be dim, and it won't matter anyhow.
And last October, how you grinned, but it just won't happen now.
And if you're victims of bad luck, the Rally Monkey's a lame duck.

Again, the Angels are in mourning, Angels.
Big losing streak, you can believe me, baby.
Again, the Angels are in mourning, Angels.
You slowly fall away.
Postseason runs, no way, bye, bye.
Through the tears of the game, all those fears.

Baby, baby
Again, the Angels are in mourning, Angels.
Big losing streak, you can believe me, baby.
Again, the Angels are in mourning, Angels.
Big losing streak, you can believe me, baby.
(repeat 'til fade)

John Jenkins - December 10, 2003 - Report this comment
I missed this parody until you pointed out today that you have done all 30 teams. Yes, 2003 was a disappointment after a very fun 2002 season. I was going to parody the Angels with "Moreno" to the tune of "Maria" from "West Side Story." One of my verses was:

Say it soft and it charms our Hispanics,
Say it loud and Steinbrenner panics.

So as the 2003 season fell apart, I abandoned the parody because I could not submit it with a straight face.
