The Lyrics

I’m am El Mariachi,
hombre con guitarra,
but an identity is faux.
Even though I importune
that I ain’t the bad one
with machine gun in his case stowed.
To hell they want me to go.

So muerto, yes, that’s muerto
could I be—they’d bring about my end.
I keep protesting loudly;
their gaffe they won’t amend.

Hear me: I’m not this killer
for whom you’re looking.
So can’t you please get off of my ass!?
I’m just endeavoring to get a good booking.
For a gaffe I don’t want to pass.

I am El Mariachi,
I play the guitarra.
They pester me for something faux.
Even though I importune,
they still have el hambre*
to blow me away rapido.

*the hunger

One of my favorite low-budget movies. Rodriguez ended up spending more money on straightening out the studio's editing mishaps than he did filming the thing. A work of genius, getting the most out of $6000 or thereabouts. A fun way to practice one's Spanish, too. Peter Marquard (Moco), the gringo drug dealer, spoke his lines phonetically, and did a good job of conveying emotions along with the words. One good reason the gang members confused the guitar case with the guitar and the one with the guns was that Rodriquez only had one case, and had to keep shifting the contents.
