The Lyrics

No, it's got nothing to do with spelling bees. This is for John A. Barry, who by now can be an honorary professor of spells at Hogwarts.
I'm just mad about Hawkins.
Ah, Hawkins, madman, you see.
I'm-a just a-mad about-a Hawkins.
He's a madman, you see.

They call me Speller Feller.
(in a Hawkins-type voice: Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.
(Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.

I've got parodies hundred.
A hundred parody songs.
Ah, to this song I have a-thundered.
With "Spell," I can't go wrong.

They call me Speller Feller.
(Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.
(Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.

Born of some sessions so bizarre.
Ah, Hawkins drank muscatel.
Drinks before he went onstage, those are.
That's why he cast all those spells!

They call me Speller Feller.
(Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.
(Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.

(He's a speller, such a speller...)

(instrumental break)

E-lec-tric-al recording
it sounds like a man who's crazed.
E-lec-a-tric-al recording
has left John Barry very amazed.

They call me Speller Feller.
(Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.
(Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.

Ahhhh... Hawkins!
Yeah... he's a madman for sure.
I'm-a just a-mad about-a Hawkins.
He's a madman, you see.

They call me Speller Feller.
(Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.
(Quite rightly!)
They call me Speller Feller.
Yeah...
(fade out)
That third verse is no joke: Screamin' Jay seemed to be unable to recapture his stage performance in the studio, and when the producer asked what he usually did to get himself going before going on, he said he drank some muscatel. Screamin' Jay was very much under the influence when he recorded "I Put a Spell On You" in 1956. What worked for him, however, did not work so well for Jim Morrison of the Doors, but that's another story altogether.
