Parody Song Title:

"Hooked on a Series"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Just a fun song about watching TV, now vs. then
I can’t stop binge watching
“The Big Bang Theory”
Cause love those nerdy guys
Who are so funny

Mike and Harvey
Can watch “Suits” all night
Need to follow
A fake lawyer’s plight

I’m…
I’m hooked on a series
High on binge watching
What comes next on TV

Back in the 1960s*
Watched one week at a time
Couldn’t go out on Thursdays
Or, I’d really fall behind

I got hooked on “That Girl”
And Mary Tyler Moore
I would watch addicted
From our living room floor

All the good stuff
Never watched alone
Had just one set
Parents would turn on

I’d…
Get hooked on a series
Battle my siblings
For best spot near TV

All the new stuff
On Netflix alone
Makes my head whirl
Can watch on my phone

I’m…
I’m hooked on a series
No matter my aging
I escape with TV
*1960s to be sung as “nineteen sixties”

We all have our guilty pleasures of tv watching. 555 views! I have to make a chart to follow all my series annually, but have Xfinity so no need of a DVR!

Wow! I actually thought the Björn Skifs version (the first Swedish song to ever top the Billboard list, before ABBA) was an original song. If B.J. Thomas version is from the 60s I guess not: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEwNOWUA4yo

You haven't got your own link yet, Lucy? C'mon girl, get your self to ten so I can go over your work with a fine tooth comb and bloviate on how you've grown as a parodist.

Yeah Lucy! it seems to me that in the 1960s there was a lot of good tv to get hooked on! they were a little before my time of course but I absolutely love shows like Gilligan's Island The Andy Griffith Show Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. The Munsters The Addams Family Get Smart The Alfred Hitchcock Hour The Flintstones and oh I could go on for hours! but they seemed to have a particular knack for writing sitcoms then that you just don't see now for what it's worth I actually DO like The Big Bang Theory but my favourite currently-running show that I've come across I believe is Cartoon Network's "The Amazing World Of Gumball" no seriously check it out if you've got the time! I know it's on a "kids' network" and all but if you watch it you'll see a lot and I mean a lot there for adults to enjoy as well! it's bloody hilarious! I usually watch 'em on demand after they've aired and many an episode I'll have to pause and rewind because I was laughing so hard I missed something! so if there are any current shows that I'm hooked on I suppose "Gumball" would be it! 5's

Jonathan, I have some leftover adult punctuation marks for you. Here are the first two kinds. Use in good health. ................................................,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Are you the little fellow in the circle who says, "Eh, bubeh, ah, gegeh, ah That's all, folks!"? You know, right after Loony Tunes and Merry Melodies?

Rob, I don’t have a TV watching chart yet but that is certainly something that I (as a retired accountant) can see myself doing. :)

Peter, thanks for the link. I started writing to the B.J. Thomas lyrics but then discovered the Björn Skifs version. They are both great in my mind!

CML, I am thankful for all your (and other people’s) encouragement more than I can say. I am working on my tenth song now that I will try to post next or the following week. I don’t know how much I am improving but really appreciate your feedback, especially from people whose songs I admire so much. And if you ever think, I blew something. I will totally respect that. Please tell me so I can learn!

Jonathan, I love hearing your thoughts about the old and current TV shows, and which ones you liked and why. I totally agree that there is a current dearth of the good sitcoms nowadays. After some stressful days, there is nothing like just watching a half hour funny comedy to relax before going to sleep. I will definitely check out "The Amazing World Of Gumball."

Lucy, I hope you make 10 too! Btw, are you watching "Speechless?" It's hilarious.

I'm used to hearing the Jonathan King version of this with the 'ooga-chaka' hook - especially after Rifftrax did it over a scene from 'Beowulf'!

"My Mother The Car". Still see it from time to time on one of the rerun channels. Bought the complete set, but still haven't watched them all. Also, the first and only season of "Jericho". You're right about the older shows, so much higher quality. I do like "The Simpsons". "Family Guy", "American Dad", "Bob's Burgers", "Cleveland" and "Futurama", all garbage! "King of the Hill" could be good. Can't think of any of the new shows I'd watch even once, after seeing the previews.

Patrick, try any of these: Fargo, 12 Monkeys, Blindspot, Lucifer, Outlander, Designated Survivor, Speechless, Supergirl, Walking Dead, The Royals, When Calls the Heart, Lethal Weapon, Last Man on Earth, The Expanse, The Goldbergs, etc... For Adult Swim: Rick & Morty! Coming January: Star Trek Discovery...

Great "Bewitched" lyrics! Cannot believe you came out with that so quickly. Rob and Jonathan, thanks for the show suggestions. I did watch Speechless last night. Very funny and original premise. I love the "voice" the kid ultimately chose. Look forward to checking out The Amazing World Of Gumball and Designated Survivor next. I think 24 hours was the very first series I ever got hooked on binge watching.

Actually, Lucy, I didn't spin that off the top of my head last night. I've had that in my head for years. I actually wrote those lyrics down in a submission called "Theme Song: 2001, A Space Odyssey" where I do the Bill Murray routine of adding nonsense lyrics to well known instrumental themes. I did "Thus Spake Zarasthusthra", "Bewitched", and "Leave it to Beaver"
