The Lyrics

Inspired, in part, by Michael Pacholek's epic rap battles. "Eve of Destruction" is a protest against global calamity, delivered to a pounding beat, by a gravel-voiced folk singer. "Copacabana" is the tale of an individual's tragedy, sung by a polished pop star to a bouncy little melody that almost mocks the victim's misfortune. I wondered what Barry McGuire might do to the sad story of Lola and Tony.
The night was dark, the joint was jumping
Horns were blaring, drums were thumping
Young couples on the floor, their booties bumping
The bouncer at the door, a wad of cash was clumping
Such a good time they were having, no one was grumping

And the crowd shouts
Over and over and over again, the din
"Won't you take it off!
We want to see more of Lola"

"Don't you understand that I'm trying to pay
Fees for the school I'm attending by day?
When I get my degree I'll be moving away
If some cash I can save, then it's good-bye I'll wave
And on that day with joy, I'm going to wed my boy"

But the crowd shouts
Over and over and over again, the din
"Just shake it, girl!
We want to see more of Lola"

Rico waltzes in, his diamond pendant pending
He licks his lips, a message sending
They all know the truth, there's no need for pretending
Tony works behind the bar, some drink's he's vending
Watches Rico's moves, knows where this is trending
Tony throws a punch, his true love defending
What happens next, a mystery unending

Now detectives
Over and over and over again demand
"Did someone here see
The fight of Tony and Rico?"

The Copa ballroom closed, it's now a disco
The clientele is mostly gay, it's San Francisco
Each night at eight, she sits in her place
Reflected in glass, her tired, wrinkled face
The pounding in her head, the booze can't erase
She buries her head, to hide her disgrace
The ring on her finger, her lover's last trace

And she swallows
Over and over and over again, the gin
She's lost her mind, she's lost her love, she's lost Tony

Yes, she's lost her youth, she's lost her looks
She's lost Tony!

Sorry it took me so long to get to this one. I love inverted parodies (I think that's what we've decided to call them), and this was inspired. I'm looking forward to the companion piece.
