The Lyrics

Once in a while maybe you will feel the urge
To break some kind of copyright law
By recording certain hits from song-sharing guys
Like Prince or Metallica or Wu-Tang or Rihanna
But deep in your heart you know the guilt would drive you mad
And the shame would leave a permanent scar
'Cause you start out stealing songs from other musicians
And re-record them for no reason and you've gone too far

So don't do cover songs
Their origins are where they belong
Go ask for permission like you know that you should
Or don't do cover songs

Oh,you don't wanna mess with a secret agency
Who'll sue you if you cover a smash hit
It doesn't matter if you're a grandpa or a 7-year-old boy
They'll treat you like the evil,hard-hitting criminal troop, that's it

So don't do cover songs
You think tributing must be strong
Go ask for permission like you know that you should
Or don't do cover songs

Don't take away money from artists just like me
How else can I afford another solid gold TV?
And diamond-studded billiards, these things don't grow on trees
So all I ask is,everybody,please...

So don't do cover songs
Even some musicians know it's wrong
Go ask for permission like you know that you should
Or don't do cover songs...
Don't do cover songs
Or you'll wind up in jail for half-year long
Go ask for permission like you know that you should
Or don't do cover songs...
Don't do cover songs
Or you'll burn in heck, the rights are strong
Go ask for permission like you know that you should
Or don't do cover songs

What's wrong with doing covers?

Not the best parody ever, but still dang good. 4-4-5. On the whole issue of doing cover songs: Sometimes , I believe that the originals are better, and sometimes I like the covers better. For example, I like the original Ram Jam version of "Black Betty" better than Spiderbite's cover. On the flip side (meaning cover > original), I like Boney M's version of "Rivers of Babylon" than the original version by the Melodians, but that's because I haven't heard the Melodians' version yet. Even if I did hear their version, I'd probably still like Boney M's version better. As for Rihanna, if a disco remix were made of one of her songs, it'd be better than the original version, for example, making a remix of "Pon De Replay" that sounded similar to Amii Stewart's "Knock on Wood".
