The Lyrics
This is a song devoted to the whammy, the devious, evil, money-stealing creature from one of the best game shows of the 1980's, Press Your Luck. The show ran from 1983 to 1986 on CBS. Players took spins at a big gameboard to win cash and prizes. They would hit a plunger to stop the board while yelling, "STOP!" In the event that they hit a whammy, he would come out and mock the player. The contestant would lose all they had earned up to that point. (Now, there is another version! Whammy: The All New Press Your Luckairs on Game Show Network every night at 10:00 or 10:30 Eastern, I believe.)
This is an evil, red creature with a dollar sign on his chest.
And stealing bucks is what he likes to do best.
He intends to turn riches into agony and misery.
When he comes, don't you come cry to me.
He is the reason that you can't keep all your money.
Taking prizes and cash is this critter's purpose.
