The Lyrics

The other day I started thinking about a song describing another event that left lasting changes to our way of life.
Where were you when the world was cancelled
That first week in spring?
Stocking the shelves in your neighborhood Wal Mart
Preparing for a holiday fling?
Did you stay at your post because you were essential
Did the boss tell you, "Go home"?
Did you freeze in your tracks in fear of your neighbor
Shudder at what happened in Rome?

Did you know any children who lost their school lunches
Going to class on the 'net?
Do you remember the things you put off 'til tomorrow
Are you looking back in regret?
Did you wait in your car for a medical test
From those heroes who work every day without rest?
Did you cross your fingers over what it might tell you
And how you'd react at the worst that might happen?

I'm just a scribbler of unsung songs
I'm not a macho survivalist man
I watch the Red and the Blue undermine one another
But at least we're not at war with Iran
Now, I've been sneezing and I've got a caugh
I've been congested ever since I was young
Joint pain and fever are typical symptoms
And I've had every one

Where were you when our lives were cancelled
Earlier this year?
Finding yourself with a houseful of children
Avoiding Corona brand beer?
Did you feel happy for all the survivors
On a crowded street were you now alone?
Did they tell you you couldn't go visit your mother
And you had to say, "I love you" by phone?

Did you cover your face, put a probe to your forehead
Wipe down everything you might touch?
Did the Governor say, "We'll reopen in stages"
Do you trust her? No, not very much
Did you sit on the "throne" and think of the paper
Buy up and try to hoard some?
Did you turn off that Fauci press conference you're watching
And turn on History Channel reruns?
Did you stay home from church 'cause you might get arrested
Stand in line for free groceries?
Did you even shun contact with your own family
Not wanting to transmit a disease?

I put my lyrics to others' tunes
I'm not truly musical guy
I post political rants for those in agreement
And others who don't see eye to eye
I can't use Facebook, I don't have a cloud
The public library is closed 'til pigs fly
The stimulus check was one good thing Trump gave us
Quickly spent it good-bye

I'm a guy who writes parody songs
I've never been a cyberspace geek
I start jotting down notes when I get inspiration
Upload them all the first of the week
I've read history, I've seen all the films
I know emergencies have happened before
Until further notice or hell freezes over
We've been locked down once more

Will we open once more?
Will we open once more?

Where were you when the world stopped moving
That first week in spring?
