Superchic[k] Meaning:Superchic[k] \ Superchic[k]\ (s p r- ch k) n. (1) Either whoever’s in Superchic[k]’s van when it leaves. (2) Gender-neutral term for someone who is figuring out the path to greatness that God intended for them. History of it: Max was corresponding with a fan whose email name was Superchick11. Superchick11 shared with them this story: The popular people at school told her that she could be part of their group if she dressed like them. The next day, she showed up with her gym clothes on over her clothes. She made her point, won her fellow students respect, and was even elected homecoming queen.  Hiro
Third Eye Blind A third eye is another name for a person's sixth sense, and the band members thought most people were blind to this sense. Roxxi
Jack Killed Jill They couldn't come up with a name and when asked what was the first song everyone in the band had ever learned to sing/play, the singer blurted out Jack And Jill. They toyed with other ideas but kept "killed" cause it was easier to remember. Terry

The Replacements They were initially named Dogbreath, but after a few drunken gigs in which they had soiled their name (a club owner apparently refused to book them again), they renamed themselves The Replacements (since they were "replacing" Dogbreath) in order to keep getting gigs. They are often nicknamed "The Mats" which is short for "The Placemats" which itself is a nickname for "The Replacements." Chris Mars later said in an interview that after he and Bob Stinson had left (or got fired from) the band, they briefly considered forming a new band called "The Replaced." Mark J
Nine Inch Nails Eidetic was closest when he explained te origin of NIN's name. Trent simply thought it up one day, while living with drummer Chris Vrenna. He wanted something that sounded "hard"... tough as nails. Plus it looked good when written down and could easily be abbreviated in many ways, shapes, and forms. After passing Trent's brutal one-week-test (if a name he thought up didn't sound good after a week, Trent would automatically dismiss it and move on to another one) Nine Inch Nails was accepted. HOWEVER, the stories of the crucifixtion nails, coffin nails, and state of liberty's fingernails are indeed true, but 100% coincidental. This is coming straight from the source (Trent Reznor) himself. Renholder
Ugly Kid Joe The band had no name but were following another band named after an infamous Gangster, "Pretty Boy Floyd." The name was just a parody of the band they were following. Danger-us
Led Zeppelin After the "Yardbirds" broke up, Jimmy Page was telling friend Keith Moon (drummer from the Who) that he was thinking of getting a new band together. Keith Moon is alleged to have said sarcastically, "Yeah, that ought to go over like a lead zeppelin..." A zeppelin is a lighter than air craft also known as a blimp. Obviously, a lead zeppelin would not fly very well. Page removed the "a" in lead and the name was born. Danger-us
Talking Heads Front man David Byrne took the name from the nickname for people who simply read news reports on television. They're often referred to as "Talking Heads." Danger-us

Mr. Big "Mr. Big" was chosen by Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan and company from a song done by the band "Free" (original band of later Bad Company frontman Paul Rogers) of the same name. The liner notes of the album where Mr. Big covers this song confirms this. Danger-us
54-40 The band came up with the name based on a political and historical reference that was put forth when the Canadian-American border was being determined. The slogan was "54-40 or fight" meaning the latitude and longitude of where the one policital aggregate was wanting. The political aggregate was based in Vancouver, BC where the band is from originally.  Jeff Kahl
Pink Floyd The original members, Waters, Wright, Mason, and Barrett were fans of blues music especially the blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. The original name of the band was The Pink Floyd Sound and fans called them simply Pink Floyd. This information can be found in the book "A Saucerful of Secrets", an extensive biography of the band and its memebers. Doc Scott
Five Iron Frenzy While in college one of the band members was clowning around in his dorm room by swinging around a five iron. One of his roommates commented that his friend was in a five iron frenzy, thus the origin of the name. Doc Scott

Oasis All these postings for OASIS are wrong, if you bought their DVD you would know that Liam named the band after a bar that his dad met John Lennon from the Beatles in. It was called the OASIS. Zack Simpson
Adam & the Ants The band's name and the name of the singer Adam Ant was a play on the title of an old Hannah-Barbera cartoon, "The Atom Ant Show". Atom was a superhero ant who could fly and lift ten times his body weight.  newave

54-40 In 1980 Vancouverite Brad Merritt was looking for a name. Along with Neil Osborne he’d put together a rock group . Merritt found his name in a slogan from the 1844 American presidential election: ‘54"40’ or fight!’ were the words of James Polk; it refers to the southern border of Alaska -- 54°, forty minutes latitude -- and indicated that Polk would try to seize all the territory that now makes up British Columbia. Polk's failure to do so is saluted in the band's name. Canuck
Motley Crue The band was sitting around trying to come up with a great band name (they were thinking of calling themselves "Christmas"), when a friend of the band walked in and said," Well, you look like a motley looking crew" so...hence, the name of the band. wayne b
Sixpence None the Richer The name of the band came from C.S. Lewis's book "Mere Christianity." There is a part of the book where a child asks for six pence from his father to buy him a gift. The father gives his son the money and thinks that he spent six pence for a gift, so he is really getting the money back in the form of the gift. The band saw it fitting with the message that God gave His Son to buy back His creation. The origin was mentioned in Charisma magazine and many other sources. burgerjohnson
DC Talk Every source (including the early albums) reveals that "DC" stood for "decent christian." It also stood for Washington DC, being that Toby McKeehan was once referred to as DC Talk. Later, he met up with Michael Tait, and soon after, Kevin Max, and called themselves "DC Talk and the One Way Crew." In their first album, the name DC Talk is the name of the group, but in the picture, you will see "One Way Crew" written on the wall. The One Way Crew part disappeard in the second album, and by Jesus Freak, the reference of Washington DC is gone, making the name officially from DC Talk to dc Talk (although uppercases are still used occasionally.) I've also heard that the name of the group was changed yet again to all lowercases. It seems that way, but I am not yet sure. burgerjohnson
Tait All sources point out that the name of the band is not named after lead singer Michael Tait, but in honor of his father Nathel Tait. whitehorse

Sisters of Mercy I know there's the Leonard Cohen song, but Sisters of Mercy are actually named after THE SISTERS OF MERCY, a group/convent of nuns in Leeds, where they come from. I also had a nice old lady start talking to me in a pub in Dublin, because she thought my Sisters of Mercy T-Shirt was to do with the nuns. Very surreal. James
