AC/DC I heard on a live intervies on VH1 that AC/DC said they got it off the back of a sewing machine. I also heard that the reason why Angus plays in a schoolboy outfit was because whenever he came home from school he was so eager to play his guitar that he never changed, and I heard it was his sister that gave him the idea. Matt
Oleander The band began casting about for a name during band practices. Ric Ivanisevich mentioned seeing some oleander bushes next to some railroad tracks near their practice space. Thomas Flowers and Doug Eldridge figured it was oblique enough to pass muster. As Thomas said, "It's so ambiguous that it could be a disco band or a death-metal band."  Raven
Pink Floyd It is really a double meaning. The official reason was that both "Pink" and "Floyd" were part of the names of 2 of their record producers, but one part of the reason at that they chose this, is because when someone is very high on marijuana, their eyes become bloodshot and everything looks pink, which Im sure they have had plenty of experience with. chris

Linkin Park Many speculate they named themselves after Lincoln Park in Santa Monica where most of the boys hail from...if they misspelled it, it would be easier to get a website AND since there seems to be a Lincoln Park everywhere, they'd always sound like a local band...though in an interview on their DVD, lead singer Chester said the name means nothing...go figure? Sean Foley's Victim
Dido Dido is her first name. She is actually named after a mythological creature. Jessie
Slipknot The song slipknot was on the bands first album - mate feed kill repeat. They just thought it was a cool name. Bean
311 311 is an Omaha police code for indecent exposure. One rainy day, P-Nut and some friends went skinny dipping in a public pool. They were apprehended by police. One of P-Nut's friends (Jim Watson) was arrested, cuffed (naked) and taken home to his parents. He was issued a citation for a code 311 (indecent exposure). They thought this was funny, so they took it as their band name. After the humor of the name wore off - they still kept it because they liked that it was just abstract and that it did not define them in anyway. The name did not describe there sound or politics, it just let the music speak for itself. Since most interviewers always ask us "What does 311 mean?", they have come up with lots of different answers over the years. Some include.... Nick - "five friends making music", Tim - "a number dictated to me by a higher intelligence", P-Nut - "knowing a little numerology and studying a little magic, which I do; in some factions, three is man and 11 is magic. So 311 is like male magic."  DJ Whiteboy
Metallica Brian Slagel, a friend of drummer Lars Ulrich, was forming a metalzine and askes Lars to choose a name for it. He had 'Metal Mania' and 'Metallica'. Lars was looking for a name for his *to form* band, and was really into 'Metallica'. So he told his friend Brian to choose Metal Mania, so he could have Metallica for himself. Sylvy
Creed Creed's former bassist, Brian Marshall, had belonged to a band called Marshell's Creed (named after the street their garage band played on). So when he joined Creed, they were trying to use Marshall's previous band name but Phillip's Creed, Tremonti's Creed, or Stapp's Creed didn't sound right. So they just dubbed their band CREED. Nicole
Goo Goo Dolls Children's dolls that were packed with explosives in the Vietnam War were called Goo Goo Dolls.  mike
Captain Beefheart Actually it's because Don's uncle had a party trick where he used to take out his penis and squeeze it so hard that it turned bright red. 10CC The name used by this British band is derived from the averaged approximate amount of semen a man ejaculates on climax. (Editor's note: this explanation has been denied by the band on several occasions, I add it only so people will stop submitting it) brett
Clash Bassist Paul Simonon noticed that the word "clash" appeared over and over in the paper, referring to various riots and etc, and when he proposed it to the rest of the band as a potential name, they liked it for its strong (social) connotations. Geoff
The Moody Blues Around 1962 Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder (2 of the original band members) formed The Krew Cats and spent the next year or so touring in Hamburg before disbanding and forming The Moody Blues 5, shortening it to The M & B 5 when Mitchell and Butlers Breweries agreed to sponsor the band. KYUSS The band hates frat boys and called the band KYUSS to get over on fart-boys, Knowing Your Under Satan's Scrotum.  Bob Smoot
Drowning Pool From an interview I did with the band at Ozzfest Stevie: The name came from my parents were out of town for spring break and I decided to stay behind so I could like party and have my friends over. One of those nights I just brought my girlfriend over, watching TV and I finally got laid! I’d been working on it for months and that movie happened to be on [Clint Eastwood’s The Drowning Pool] and years later I was thinking of a band name and I was like you know; thinking about playing in a band, thinking about getting laid and the two just kind of fell together.  Keavin
Aerosmith A popular myth is that the name came from a respelling of the title of the Sinclair Lewis noval “Arrowsmith”. But in the group’s autobiography “Walk This Way” Joey Kramer tells the story of how when he was still in school he was sitting around with his girlfriend one day listening to Harry Nilsson’s “Aerial Ballet” and he and his girlfriend started thinking of cool band names that had “aero” in them, he thought up “aerosmith” and liked the way it sounded. He loved the name so much he used to write it all over his school books. But the band he was with at the time didn’t want to use it. So fast forward to a little after he had joined Joe Perry and Steven’s band. They used to sit around and watch old Three Stooges reruns, stoned. One day they had a band meeting after the “Stooges” to try and come up with a name, Kramer remembered the word he used to compulsively write on his schoolbooks. The band didn’t like it at first because they thought it was the title of the Sinclair Lewis novel they were forced to read in high school but Joey said “No, no, A-E-R-O” and it stuck because they liked the connotation of power and the lift their music gave off.  Keavin
The Replays Originaly called Radio Replay as the band had heard that a group name with the word Radio in was more likely to be succesful. Shortened to The Replays because it fitted onto the bass drum skin better! tony
Hootie and The Blowfish Back in the college days of the band, they had two college buddies. One resembled Dizzy Gallespie with large cheeks who they referred to as Blowfish, and the other wore large glass and resembled a Hoot owl, thus calling him Hootie. One night they were playing in a local bar and the two guys walked in to which one of the members commented that walking in was Hootie and The Blowfish. DJ

The Who They were The Detours until bassist John Entwistle saw a TV show in 1964 featuring an Irish group of the same name. "The Who" was suggested by Pete Townshend's friend (and later Who biographer) Dave Marsh. When the band was under Pete Meaden's management for a short time, they were The High Numbers to appeal to the Mod crowd, but reverted back to The Who when they switched to Kit Lambert & Christ Stamp's management. SBAMKMFDMDFMK
Thompson Twins They took their name from the characters of the Tin-Tin comic books. Celeste
Clear White LIght Lead guitarist Mick Barker chose it because of the drugs reference. CWL were a merger between Risky Stuff and Termite Reformation. Dale Rumbold
Lynyrd Skynyrd A couple of interesting details to add. First, Coach Skinner was a stickler for enforcing the hair policy at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL in the late '60s. Alan Collins and Gary Rossington were often the target of his wrath. Ronnie attended N.B. Forrest High, a few miles away. The band's original name was "The One Percent." When they changed it to Lynyrd Skynyrd they were very up front about the origin of the name. At first, this infuriated Coach Skinner. As the band grew in popularity he mellowed and sort of enjoyed the back-handed compliment. Leonard retired from teaching long ago and, last I heard, was a successful realtor in the Jacksonville area. Racemedic
