Having only occasionally heard a fire hydrant called a "fire plug", I got curious and looked up the term. Interestingly I found out that the term began before there were modern fire hydrants per se. A hole in a water main was plugged, so that the plug could be removed when water was needed, as for fire-fighting. Only later were fire hydrants as we know them today developed to attach to the hole in the water main, and the term "fire plug" is retained in occasional reference to them.
