Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Tony Bennett

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Tony Bennett's, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco"
The Misheard Lyrics:
High over here, it comes to me
The Real Lyrics:
High on a hill, it calls to me
The Story: R.I.P. Tony Bennett (1926-2023) - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Tony Bennett's, "Stranger In Paradise"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Somewhere in space, I hang suspenders
The Real Lyrics:
Somewhere in space I hang suspended
The Story: I learned this song when I was 7 or 8 and couldn't figure out why they would hang suspenders in outer space. I don't know why I didn't ask my mom about it. I never learned the true lyrics until I was in my 30s. - Submitted by: Marty Fry
Tony Bennett's, "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Where gigolo and gigolette
Can sink a kiss without regret
'Til they forget their broken dreams
The Real Lyrics:
Where gigolo and gigolette
Can take a kiss without regret
So they forget their broken dreams
The Story: True story: I was waiting to meet someone for a job interview in a hotel restaurant. Because of a miscommunication, I ended up waiting for more than an hour while this song was on infinite repeat on the restaurant's sound system. It didn't seem very auspicious, and sure enough I didn't end up getting the job. (FWIW, I kind of like the phrase "sink a kiss" even though it turns out I wasn't quite hearing it right.) - Submitted by: Patrick
