Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> The Highwaymen

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

The Highwaymen's, "Cottonfields"
The Misheard Lyrics:
When I was a little pretty baby
The Real Lyrics:
When I was a little bitty baby
The Story: I didn't mishear the line, but it seems that most singers who are not native speakers of English get the line wrong. I have never ever heard the correct line in Switzerland. Nobody cares to look up the lyrics because it doesn't cross their minds that they might have misheard. - Submitted by: Hans Holzherr
The Highwaymen's, "The Highwayman"
The Misheard Lyrics:
The masters hung me in the spring of twenty-five.
The Real Lyrics:
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five.
The Story: This song came out in 1985 when I was all of nine years old. My dad listened to it all the time; he still does. A few weeks ago, I was thinking about this song for some unknown reason. I had forgotten one of the other lines and looked up the lyrics on the internet because it was driving me up the wall not knowing. I laughed so hard, my sister came in and asked if I was all right-then we both laughed at what my innocent little brain had done with what actually *is* a nasty lyric. (Seems like this is the opposite of what usually happens-people hear a lyric as nasty when it's really innocent.) - Submitted by: Carolee McGill-Barker
