Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Sugar Ray

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Sugar Ray's, "Answer The Phone"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And I'd c*** on your face even though it was wrong.
The Real Lyrics:
And the glow on your face just because of one rose.
The Story: When I first heard the song, I got quite a shock when I 'heard' a sexual phrase in a song from a nice band such as Sugar Ray. I accepted the fact that in that part of the song, the singer's talking about groupies and stuff like that, so I got over it. When I checked the actual lyrics, it was something completely different! - Submitted by: Kurt
Sugar Ray's, "Every Morning"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Catherine Morgan
The Real Lyrics:
Every morning, every morning
The Story: I hear this song quite often at my gym. Perhaps the reason for my mishearing the lyrics, comes from a noisy place like a gym, not being the best place to hear music. Where did the name Catherine Morgan come from? There is a spoken track on a DC Talk album called Mrs Morgan. In this, a Mrs Morgan introduces herself as Catherine Morgan. - Submitted by: Scott McPhee
Sugar Ray's, "Fly"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I just wanna buy
The Real Lyrics:
I just wanna fly
The Story: I used to think that's what they were singing, like they wanted to buy anything. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Sugar Ray's, "Fly"
The Misheard Lyrics:
My mother got arrested and sold
The Real Lyrics:
My mother, God rest her soul
The Story: I honestly thought that was what he was saying, and I envisioned this horrible scene in a dark alley where his mom was arrested and instead of being let free, she was sold to the whorehouse. One day while at the grocery store with my dad (who was 47 at the time!!) he started reciting the correct lyrics and I only felt a little stupid! - Submitted by: Sarah
Sugar Ray's, "Fly"
The Misheard Lyrics:
My mother got arrested so...
The Real Lyrics:
My mother, God rest her soul.
The Story: My brother was walking around the house, belting this at the top of his lungs for 10 minutes before someone corrected him. Can you say embarrasing? - Submitted by: Amy Hughes
Sugar Ray's, "Fly"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Spread your big fat thighs.
The Real Lyrics:
Spread your love and fly.
The Story: On our way to the beach during the July 4th weekend, my friend and I were stuck in the biggest traffic jam. My buddy starting singing along with this song on the radio with that lyric, and it stuck. - Submitted by: BRIAN
