Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Sublime

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Sublime's, "April 29, 1992"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Now she know God spoke from all around.
The Real Lyrics:
National Guard smoke from all around.

Sublime's, "Doin' Time"
The Misheard Lyrics:
So what am I gonna be doin' for a while,
Said I'm gonna build myself
The Real Lyrics:
So what am I gonna be doin' for a wife?
I said I'm gonna play with myself.
The Story: I only remembered the lyrics to this song by ear, so there were bound to be some errors. - Submitted by: Gabe
Sublime's, "Garden Grove"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I got the microwave
I got the news dudes in the trunk of my car.
The Real Lyrics:
I got the microwave
I got the deuce- deuce in the trunk of my car.
The Story: I was driving in my car with my buddy and I was singing this song. He heard me sing that line and says to me, ' Do you always change what they say?' I said, 'What ya mean?' Then he told me what the song really went. I was convinced they said,'news dudes'. - Submitted by: Jackie Leveque

The Real Lyrics:
I got the deuce- deuce in the trunk of my car.
The Story: I was singing along to the song and when this line came up my buddy stopped me and asked if that was what I thought they said. When I answered yes he laughed and told me what the lyrics really are and what a "deuce- deuce" is. - Submitted by: Kelly
Sublime's, "Live at E's"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Yesterday I saw a whore lickin’ out the bowl
The Real Lyrics:
Yesterday I saw a whore lookin’ out for more
The Story: one of my favourite sublime songs - thought it was the misheard lyrics until I just read the correct ones on Spotify. I never really understood why the whore would be licking out the bowl but I just went with it!! - Submitted by: May
Sublime's, "Santeria"

But I really wanna stay
The Real Lyrics:
What I really wanna know, ah baby, mmm...
What I really wanna say
The Story: I was singing like this for years, it made sense, but finding the lyrics I thought my version sounded like a POV of a dog before a walk. - Submitted by: Luba
Sublime's, "Smoke Two Joints"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I spoke to Joyce in the mornin'
I spoke to Joyce at night.
The Real Lyrics:
I smoked two joints in the morning
I smoked two joints at night.

Sublime's, "Superstar Punnani"
The Misheard Lyrics:
So long, so long, so long, see ya.
The Real Lyrics:
Selassie, Selassie, Selassie, I...
The Story: This isn't my misheard lyric. But in the tabs of this song floating around the internet, there are way too many mistakes. This is the most amusing to me. Bradley uses a ton of Jamacian Patois in this song (a testament to his genius), and it's difficult to understand, but come on... 'so long, so long, so long, see ya' would just never be in a song... - Submitted by: Jeremy
Sublime's, "The Wrong Way"
The Misheard Lyrics:
the only family shes ever had are her seven older brothers
and her dumb a$$ dad she bleeded money
so he put her on the streets
and everything was going fine
until the day she let me
The Real Lyrics:
The only family she's ever had are her seven horny brothers
and her drunk a$$ dad he needed money
so he put her on the streets
and everything was going fine
until the day she met me
The Story: I was at a dance and this song came on and I was screaming the lyrics thinkin I was all cool and everything then my friends pulled me aside and were like, you know these are the real words... but I only thought that 'older brothers' instead of 'horny brothers' they told me the rest and when I bought their self-titled, I was all like 'you were all wrong, too!' - Submitted by: bradly (formerly phoebe, queen of the world)

Hurl friends is what I got
I said remember that
Hurl friends is what I got.
The Real Lyrics:
Lovin’ is what I got
I said, 'Remember that'
Lovin’, is what I got.
The Story: A bunch of us go tubing on the Guadalupe in Texas each year and call it Camp Hurl. It's become a pretty tight group of people. One year, after a few brewskis, this song came on and that's what they heard and it just fit. We've even written a song to go with it (sorta). - Submitted by: Marvin

Sublime's, "What I Got"
The Misheard Lyrics:
One-eyed God
The Real Lyrics:
What I Got
The Story: The summer that this song came out, I would frequently hear it being announced by radio dj's. While I *knew* that the song's title was 'What I Got', it always sounded to me like the djs were saying 'One-eyed God', at which point I'd get excited thinking it was a new song by Sublime that I hadn't heard...only to find out my mistake as soon as the song started playing! :-) - Submitted by: joey
