Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Stray Cats

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Stray Cats', "Rock This Town"
The Misheard Lyrics:
There's a real square Caddy looks a 1974
The Real Lyrics:
There's a real square cat, he looks like 1974
The Story: I thought that the singer was saying that '74 Cadillacs were "square", i.e., not cool. I always wondered why the singer picked out that car. - Submitted by: Mitch45
Stray Cats', "Rumble In Brighton"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Gonna run away frightened tonight!
The Real Lyrics:
There's a rumble in Brighton tonight!
The Story: Yes . . . I started singing this song when it came on the radio during my shift at a busy restaurant when I belted out, 'Gonna runaway frightened tonight!' Hotshot college boy that I was, a guy everyone regarded as a dope and a drug user looked at me quizzically and said, 'I thought it was, 'There's a rumble in Brighton tonight.' ' - Submitted by: Joe Berkery
Stray Cats', "Stray Cat Strut"
The Misheard Lyrics:
At Pembroke Pines, I don't care
The Real Lyrics:
I'm flat broke but I don't care
The Story: I thought Brian Setzer didn't care about Pembroke Pines - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Stray Cats', "Stray Cat Strut"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Stray cats strut, I'm an 80 sky
Oh I do the bossa nova and! jumpin' jive.
The Real Lyrics:
Stray cats strut, I'm a ladies' guy
Oh I'm feeling Casanova, hey, side by side.
The Story: I was seven years old and knew absolutely nothing about rock music. That was the way it sounded to me when a buddy of mine would sing it on the bus home from school. - Submitted by: Ben
