Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Sixpence None The Richer

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

The Misheard Lyrics:
And the fire flies
A Sailor Moon sparkling
So kiss me.
The Real Lyrics:
And the fire flies
Silver moon sparkling
So kiss me.
The Story: I won $20 bucks off this song because my dad was certain that the lyrics mention Sailor Moon. We were talking about anime and how popular it was when he said something about it. I corrected him immediately, but he still wouldn't believe me until I went online and showed him the right lyrics. He still jokes that they changed the words just so he'd lose the our bet. - Submitted by: Pan
The Misheard Lyrics:
Lift your overpants
Strike up the band that make the fireflies and Sailor Moon sparkling
So kiss me
The Real Lyrics:
Lift your open hand
Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance
Silver moon's sparkling so kiss me
The Story: My cousin was into Sailor Moon around the time this song came out, and we were in the car when the song came on the radio. - Submitted by: Kaz
The Misheard Lyrics:
We'll take the trademark on your father's map.
The Real Lyrics:
We'll take the trail marked on your father's map.
The Story: My Taiwanese wife sings this beautifully. but I always wondered about why the heck anyone would want to take a trademark on their father's map. - Submitted by: Charles Engelbrecht
Sixpence None the Richer's, "Breathe Your Name"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I can only free your brain
The Real Lyrics:
I can only breathe your name
The Story: It kind of sounds like it had to do with En Vogue - who had a hit with "Free Your Mind" a decade before this song came out. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
The Misheard Lyrics:
Kiss me, I'm the bearded Marlene.
The Real Lyrics:
Kiss me out of the bearded barley.
The Story: This song was playing on the radio at work and my boss said to me, 'This song is so stupid - I mean Kiss me, I'm the bearded Marlene. What's that supposed to mean?' I just about died laughing. I said, 'It's out of the bearded barley - you know like out in a field.' - Submitted by: Melody
The Misheard Lyrics:
We'll take the trail marked on your body's map
The Real Lyrics:
We'll take the trail marked on your father's map
The Story: I was familiar with this song for years but only when I listened it through headphones recently did I hear this right. It changed the whole complexion of the song :-( - Submitted by: Ian
