Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Selena Gomez

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Selena Gomez's, "Back to You"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I wanna hold you in a matzoh bowl of soup
The Real Lyrics:
I wanna hold you when I'm not supposed to
The Story: I originally heard this song late one night on my way home from work. The lyric (which I misheard) stuck in my brain and it's all I could remember about the song. (I'm not usually good at recognizing artists unless I recognize the song, and I don't typically seek out Selena Gomez songs.) So I asked my wife. She thought I was nuts. Asked a couple musically inclined friends. They too were aghast and confused. It wasn't until several months later that I managed to hear it on the radio again, pulled over and used Shazam on my phone to find out what it was. - Submitted by: Blackwoodbear79
Selena Gomez's, "Bad Liar"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Mama, mama.
Oh, trying up, trying up, trying up, trying up, try.
Oh, trying up, trying up, trying up, trying up, try.
Not to feeling for you.
Mama, mama.
Not to feeling for you.
The Real Lyrics:
No, no, no, no.
Oh, I'm trying, I'm trying, I'm trying, I'm trying, I'm trying.
Oh, trying, I'm trying, I'm trying, I'm trying, I'm trying.
Not to give in to you.
No, no, no, no.
Not to give in to you.
The Story: I wondering if this song is by Sydney Sierota. However, when I looking up the lyrics, "Bad Liar" was first performed by Selena instead of Sydney Sierota. I hear Selena for the first time when she was performing "The Heart Wants What It Wants" on the radio. Then, she was featured on Zedd's song, "I Want You to Know". Later, Selena performing her new single, "Bad Liar", that sometimes misinterpreted as a song by Sydney Sierota. But, once again, after I looking up that, "Bad Liar" was performed by Selena instead of Sydney Sierota. It sounding like that Selena say in a low notation while she was recorded "Bad Liar". Sometimes, before "Bad Liar" came out, there is a singer named Selena Quintanilla-Perez or nicknamed Selena who best known for her crossover album, "Dreaming of You", released in 1995. "Dreaming of You" was also the title of a single. About this song: However, this story is about "Bad Liar" by Selena (not Selena Quintanilla-Perez who also popular during the 1990s). "Bad Liar" was written by Selena, Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, and Ian Kirkpatrick, the latter of whom also produced "Bad Liar". This song also samples the bassline from Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer", written by David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Tina Weymouth, who are therefore credited. "Bad Liar" received acclaim from critics, some of whom called it Selena's best track to date. David Byrne also complimented this song. "Bad Liar" currently reaching the Top 40 of Billboard's Pop Chart, the UK Singles Chart, and other major charts internationally. Begins with a steady beat built around rhythm and an uneven bassline from "Psycho Killer", "Bad Liar", described as a "slow-build pop rock tune". - Submitted by: Wisnu Aji

Selena Gomez's, "Love You Like a Love Song"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I love you like a love song baby,
And my heart keeps beatin', beat-beat-beat-beat-beat-beatin'.
The Real Lyrics:
I love you like a love song baby,
And I keep hittin' repeat-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat.
The Story: For some reason I thought she was singing about her heart beating, and I thought it was ironic that the repeating lyric sounded a bit like "repeat-peat-peat-peat". So when I discovered the lyric actually WAS "repeat-peat-peat-peat" I became caught in a meta-irony loop. - Submitted by: Dan H.
