Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Roberta Flack

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Roberta Flack's, "Killing Me Softly (With His Song)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Killing me softly with his thumbs.
The Real Lyrics:
Killing me softly with his song.
The Story: We were playing the game 'Cranium', and a friend of mine was supposed to guess the title of a song from one of the others of us humming the tune. He knew the song was 'Killing Me Softly' but we insisted he had to get the *full* title to get credit for the question. Admitting that he had never listened to it very carefully, he finally guessed that it was 'with his *thumbs*' which the rest of us all though was fairly hilarious. - Submitted by: Torka
Roberta Flack's, "Killing Me Softly With His Song"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Come in my face with his fingers.
The Real Lyrics:
Strumming my pain with his fingers.
The Story: Neither "Strumming my pain" or "Come in my face" would have meant a lot to me when I first heard the song at age 11. - Submitted by: PCL
Roberta Flack's, "Killing Me Softly With His Song"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Killing myself with my fingers.
The Real Lyrics:
Killing me softly with his song.
The Story: When I was really young, it was always a great treat to go to the fancy restaurant. We had to dress up in suits and ties and be in the "adult world" for a couple hours. My dad took us to a local restaurant that always seemed to have a torchlight singer covering this song. I never figured out what she was singing. I wondered why she was singing about doing that to herself. My brother and I walked around for days singing "killing myself with my fingers" and grownups kept laughing every time they heard the lyric. Finally, I asked my dad why she was doing that with her own fingers and, after laughing for a long time, he told me the real lyric. - Submitted by: Dan Glaser
Roberta Flack's, "Killing Me Softly With His Song"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Strumming my back with his fingers
The Real Lyrics:
Strumming my pain with his fingers.
The Story: I just heard this song recently and she pronounces the word "pain" very poorly and it still sounds more like "back" than "pain". However when I hear someone else sing it, it is clearly "pain". - Submitted by: Robert

Singing Clair Lee strong

Singing clear and strong
The Story: Another instance of "Clair Lee", alongside "I Can See Clearly Now". - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Roberta Flack's, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Like the trembling heart of a Captain Kirk
The Real Lyrics:
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
The Story: It took me as to why Roberta Flack had to do with Star Trek. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
