Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Rickie Lee Jones

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Rickie Lee Jones', "Chuck E's In Love"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Hey welcom n***a boy, behave this-a-way, yeah
The Real Lyrics:
Hey what could make a boy behave in this-a-way, yeah
The Story: I've been believing this lyric for decades, and actually had to read the lyrics as it played to hear it right. I was alway shocked she would say this, and it never really tied to the story, but I just couldn't hear it any other way. - Submitted by: DW
Rickie Lee Jones', "Chuck E's In Love"
The Misheard Lyrics:
How come he don't come and PIP with me, down at the meter no more? And... How come he turn off the TV and hang that sign on the doorway?
God, help me, cause... how come... say.... Hail with the maker-boy, hail to the way(ee)..yeah!
Well he learned it all from his lines.... now... he do-it every time...
He's goin'-to, stutter when he talks...
But, it's true, it's true!
He sho' is acquired... he's kind of cool and inspired sort a jazz when he walks
Where's his jacket and his old blue jeans?
lF... this aint healthy it is some kinda... cl-e-an statement
The fact is...
Chuck-E's in love... Yeah! Yeah! Chuck-E's in love... love, love, love... Chuck-E's in love... Yeah! Yeah! Chuck-E's in....
I don't believe what you're say'n to me... This is so much, I've got to see...
Is it here? I look in at the pool hall... Well, is it here? I look in the "drugstow"... Well, is it here?
No.... He don't come here... no more....
Well, I'll tell you what, I saw him... He was sit'n behind us down at the pa-n-tag-es
An.....d whatever it is, that he's got up his, sleeve... Well, I hope that it isn't contagious
What's her name? Is that her there? Oh Christ, I think he's even combed his hair! Is that her? Well, what's her name? Oh, is it never gonna to be the same?
That's not her... I know what's wrong... Cuz, Chuck-E is love with another girl, singing this song
Don't you know?
Chuck-E's in love... Yeah! Yeah! Chuck-E's in love... love, love, love... Chuck-E's in love... Uh, huh! Chuck-E's in....
Chuck-E's in love, Chuck-E's in love, he's in lo--ve.....Love...
with... me...

The Real Lyrics:
Hey what could make a boy behave in this-a -way, yeah
The Story: Rickie Lee is a sweetheart, in fact, it would be wonderful to meet her since our ages are about the same and I, like so many others, appreciate her singing. What she and her producers have successfully done here is VERY cleverly change the lyrics over the years to be politically correct (PC). What was ORIGINALLY sung and what appears all over the Web as "the lyrics" are two entirely different things. Pull up the *original* recording, turn it up and listen and re-listen to what's actually being said vs. what the lyrics indicated from almost any Web site out there - and it's obviously two different things.. Not only that, what's shown isn't complete in regards to all of what Rickie is actually singing. - Submitted by: Gary

Rickie Lee Jones', "Chuck E.'s in Love"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Chuckie's in love
or
Chuckholes in the mud
The Real Lyrics:
Chuck E.'s in Love
The Story: When we were in our young teens (many years ago!), a friend of mine sang the 'chuckhole' version one day. She was completely sincere and thought those were the real words to the song. We laughed so hard we cried and she'll never live it down. - Submitted by: A. Smith
