Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Peggy Lee & Mel Torme

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Peggy Lee & Mel Torme's, "The Old Master Painter"
The Misheard Lyrics:
The Old Masturbator from far away hills.
The Real Lyrics:
The old master painter from far away hills.
The Story: Sitting reading the Sunday papers I was jolted when this track from a cd, 'Peggy Lee:Manana', started playing and that word seemed to be repeated in every chorus. I guess being a 1950 recording and Lee and Torme sharing a mike contributed to the 'sound-alike'. But I listened carefully, and had to read the sleeve notes to realise the 'real' words. - Submitted by: David and Donna
Peggy Lee & Mel Torme's, "The Old Master Painter"
The Misheard Lyrics:
dreamed up a hue for the blue summer skies painted the devil in his daring dye
The Real Lyrics:
The old master painter from far away hills.
The Story: Just what i thought were the words in the early fifties . I was just a little kid listening to the record. - Submitted by: Anne Parker
