Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Paul Young

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Paul Young's, "Everytime You Go Away"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Every time you go away.
You take a piece of meat with you.
The Real Lyrics:
Every time you go away.
You take a piece of me with you.
The Story: So many posts of the song "Everytime You Go Away" are misheard as "meat". Many listeners wrote the title of this song as "Every Time You Go Away" as also sung that title by Paul himself. But, the original title of this song is "Everytime You Go Away". About this song: "Everytime You Go Away" is track #2 on his second studio album, "The Secret of Association", released on 25 March 1985. It was written by Daryl Hall. Originally recorded by Daryl Hall and John Oates from their album, "Voices", released in 1980 but was not released as a single, Paul version of this song finally released as a single and topping Billboard's Pop Chart. The Soft Rock power ballad was also reaching the Top 40 internationally including the UK Singles Chart where it reaching #4 there. Making it Paul's biggest hit song to date. - Submitted by: Wisnu Aji
Paul Young's, "The Love of the Common People"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Daddy's gonna buy you a Dream Maclinto
The Real Lyrics:
Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to
The Story: Back in the '80s I often wondered what a Maclinto was (obviously the "Dream" prefix meant it was top-of-the-range), I just assumed it was something adults knew about and I'd find out when I was older. - Submitted by: Drew Rodger
