Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Nena

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

20 Jahre: Nena Feat. Nena album at
Nena's, "99 Luftballons"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Non-oo-non say loop-a-loop.
The Real Lyrics:
Neunundneunzig Luftballons
The Story: I thought that's what Drew Barrymore's character was singing in The Wedding Singer. - Submitted by: Steve K
Nena's, "99 Luftbaloons"
The Misheard Lyrics:
College hoops out in a hurry.
The Real Lyrics:
Call the troops out in a hurry.
The Story: This song has always been a mass of misinterpreted lyrics for me. After 20 hearings, I could have always sworn she was providing commentary on March Madness. Once I found out it was about impending war (this was years ago, by the way), I finally sorted it out. - Submitted by: Marshall Garvey
Nena's, "99 Red Balloons"
The Misheard Lyrics:
So grab a little summer sky
The Real Lyrics:
Scramble in the summer sky
The Story: This song was a minefield of misheard lyrics for me - but then I guess it wasn't easy to sing clearly in a secondary language for the German lead singer. (Actually, I first heard this song in spring '03, around the 20th anniversary of its first release, and I thought it was Avril Lavigne singing because the lead sounded so much like her and Lavigne was pretty popular at the time.) I was annoyed about this particular lyric because I thought my own version was so much better! Well, more fun-loving, at any rate. :-P - Submitted by: Siobhan
