Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Melanie Safka

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Melanie Safka's, "Alexander Bettle"
The Misheard Lyrics:
But then he pulled my jeans down
he went and pulled my jeans down
he went and pulled my jeans down
The Real Lyrics:
But nanny let my beetle out
Yes nanny let my beetle out
She went and let my beetle out
The Story: At the time this song came out in the early 70's I was about six years old. We had just done a class on sexual abuse. The lesson was very backward by today's standards. We were all warned that if we went near a public tiolet, we might meet a HOMOSEXUAL! Homosexuals were dirty men who hung around public toilets waiting for little boys to come along so they could pull our pants down. I thought this song was about somebody who had gone to close to a toilet and had their jeans pulled down by a homosexual. I know it sounds insane in the 21st century, but that is what the teacher actually told us. - Submitted by: bukster
