Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Mary Chapin Carpenter

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Mary Chapin Carpenter's, "Down At The Twist And Shout"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Find a two-step partner in the KGB.
The Real Lyrics:
Find a two-step partner and a Cajun beat.
The Story: I believed that this song was saying it was the KGB for like a dozen years. In hindsight, I doubt you'd find a KGB guy in Louisiana, especially during the Soviet Union days, when this song was written. - Submitted by: Jack
Mary Chapin Carpenter's, "I Feel Lucky"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I'll be your Muppet, I'll be your Muppet, yeah
The Real Lyrics:
I feel lucky, I feel lucky, yeah
The Story: I was shopping today at a Kroger here in Atlanta and this song came on, that I've never heard before and I could swear that Carpenter was singing the lyrics I misheard. I couldn't understand why some woman would want to be someone's Muppet or exactly which Muppet she wanted to be. I got this picture in my mind that she was singing the song to the late great Jim Henson. - Submitted by: Peter
Mary Chapin Carpenter's, "Passionate Kisses"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Accident victim
The Real Lyrics:
Passionate kisses
The Story: I knew that the song could not possibly be about an accident victim, but that is honestly the only lyrics I could make out of that line in the song. I could not ask anybody about the song, because they never knew which song i was referring to, and I did not know the artist. Approximately seven years passed before I finally heard the song playing in a store with a very crisp stereo system. I finally heard her articulate the words, 'Passonate kisses,' instead of 'accident victim.' It was a true epiphany. - Submitted by: Joel C. Hunt

The Misheard Lyrics:
Basket of Biscuits
The Real Lyrics:

The Story: Another one playfully misinterpreted by my son Bobby. - Submitted by: LAURA GOODWIN
Mary Chapin Carpenter's, "Passionate Kisses"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Passin' out kisses.
The Real Lyrics:
Passionate kisses
The Story: When my daughter was 3, this was one of her favorite songs. She would sing it at the top of her voice. We didn't have the heart to tell her. - Submitted by: Laurie
Mary Chapin Carpenter's, "Passionate Kisses"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Shouldn't I have all of this, and
Passion and dishes
The Real Lyrics:
Shouldn't I have all of this, and
Passionate kisses
The Story: I was washing dishes when I was around twelve and wanted to sing a song to fit, and so I started singing, "Passion and dishes." My parents heard me singing and came in there to inform me the lyrics were "passionate kisses!" - Submitted by: Tanya
