Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection album at
marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you
No wind, no rain
or midriff bulge
Can stop me baby 'cause you are my goal.
The Real Lyrics:
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you
No wind, no rain
or winter's cold
Can stop me baby, 'cause you are my goal.
The Story: I was about 5 or 6 when this song was out. There was also a girdle commercial that came on about a long line girdle with that controlled midriff bulge. Since this seemed to be a bad thing, my six year old mind told me that midriff bulge would keep the average man away. - Submitted by: Lori
