Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Louis Armstrong

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Ella & Louis album at Amazon.com
Louis Armstrong's, "Faith"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Folks who say, 'Cash all Heaven'
Folks who say, 'Trash all Heaven'.
The Real Lyrics:
Folks who lend cash all have it
Folks who save trash all have it.
The Story: The first time I heard Satchmo sing this, about 1965, I thought he was expressing some people's optimistic, or even mercenary ('Cash all Heaven') sentiment, then cynical and nihilistic ('Trash all Heaven!') sentiments. Years later, when I listened to the lp with this song on it, I listened more closely and realized Satchmo was not expressing any esoteric sentiments, but rather something more down-to-earth. - Submitted by: Doug Montgomery
Louis Armstrong's, "What A Wonderful World"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And the dogs say goodnight.
The Real Lyrics:
And the dark sacred night.
The Story: My 10-year-old brother was listening to this song and asked me what it had to do with dogs. I had no clue what he was talking about, and so he said, 'You know, the part when he sings 'and the dogs say goodnight.'' - Submitted by: Emilie J
Louis Armstrong's, "What a Wonderful World"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I see clouds at night
The Real Lyrics:
I see clouds of white
The Story: It sounded like it when I heard it. He really needed to see them at night along with the stars! - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Louis Armstrong's, "What a Wonderful World"
The Misheard Lyrics:
The bright blessed day and the dogs say "Good Night."
The Real Lyrics:
The bright blessed day and the dark sacred night.
The Story: I teach ESL - English as a Second Language - and wanted to teach this song to my adult students. Another teacher said she had the words typed up and this was the line she's, apparently, taught. - Submitted by: Judy R.
